    Cranking RPM

Can anyone tell me what the approximate cranking rpm should be of an XS11 with a healthy battery?

    Thx,

i aint got a clue but when i was working on my bros bike the start didnt spin that fast so i would say 500 rpm or less i think it has alot of other things to deal with when starting a bike then just the cranking rpm like fuel spark and compression too

Hook your scope up to the pickup coil, crank it, and get the milliseconds from leading edge to leading edge. That gives you secs/rev. Divide 1/(sec/rev) = revs/sec. 60 * revs/sec = rpm.

Don't know how much math you know, so there it is.

        Bike's 27 miles from the scope :-)

I did get a schmitt trigger hooked up the other day to the pickup coil output - and it works. But, I doubt it will work if I slow the rpm's down to cranking speed. I think the wave form will be to weak to trigger the schmitt trigger.

Looking to amplify the signal now - just trying to make it as easy and painless as possible.

Luckily I got a whole bunch of circuit boards from a client of mine filled up with all kinds of goodies!!

On that note, anyone know of a device to amplify and create a nice square wave, all in one package, with minimum # of pins for a tiny outlay of $$$?

          :-)

555 timer circuit is exactly what you're looking for, I believe.

Easy to use, requires a very small footprint circuit to drive it. Very reliable, too. Could be encased in epoxy and last forever.

100mA output, I believe. I'd bet there are higher powered versions, too. This thing's been around forever.

I'm not sure this would work, but you could loop the signal through a op amp ( quad if needed) and boost it that way. Might get noise though.

                Cranking RPM?

If you still need cranking rpm, I'll bring home my tacks from work and find out. (got a remote digital and a neat little tack that you can just press against a shaft)

Look into a zero crossing detector, usually built with a comparator, but can be done with an opamp, LM358 for single voltage automotive type apps.

Yes, if you can bring home your tach and get the info that would be great.

I'll check into the circuits you guys metioned.

I just picked up a gear reduced dc motor today from work, so hopefull that will get me close to the cranking rpm.

Looking further, this seems to have the best description of how to make a Astable Oscillator (Square Wave Generator). Really descriptive.

                          forgot to check cranky rpm
try to remember tomorrow and post when I get home

                            Cranking RPM

                            190 to 200 rpm

Don't know if my 80G is a good overall sample for the XSs.
                            Nothing to compare to yet.
Just under 17K miles and no problem starting.
