  • Cam Chain Master Link

OK... Probably a dumb question for most, but I just installed a new cam chain. When you connect the master link, what's the best way to mash the ends so it stays? I don't have the high dollar tool, and I am afraid of mashing it too much and crimping the new chain.
Also.... screwed around and dropped one end of my cam chain back down into the motor. I tried to use a telescoping pen-type magnet, but it kept grabbing everything except what I wanted... especially when I got to the crank. So... with a small flashlight in my mouth.... I took a long screwdriver, attached the magnet to the tip of it, and pushed it right down to the chain... picked up the end, and pulled it right out. Took all of 2 minutes!! Maybe this can help family relations when your brother-in-law wants to help!!

To peen the end, you need a helper on the other side to hold the "anvil." Something like the bar of a weight-lifting set would be ideal. It is a bit tight in there. Then, use a centerpunch an a small sledgehammer. Once she is on there good, with the pins flaired a little, use a flat punch to peen the top (mushroom it slightly). That is what I did and it worked for me.

While you're doing this, check it occasionaly to seen you don't peen it so tight that the link binds. With the good part of your bificals, you should see a noticeable flare where the end of the pin has been flared over, but just don't mash it too hard.
