    oil leak help-part deux

    well, its not from the drain bolt below the left engine cover. It appears to be coming from underneath all the ignition components. Crankshaft seal? Other possibilities? any advice would be appreciated. thx '79 xs11

    No other possibilities. I have had the same prolem. New seals are available from bikebandit.

        Hey Portero,

        See this thread:Help with XJ Crankshaft seals .

        They say the left side has a lip that fits in a groove inbetween the cases....requiring splitting the cases....YUCK! However, John talks about being able to remove and the replace it with just a PRESSURE fit seal, not having to use the one with a lip? This would definitely be much easier to do a replace WITHOUT having to split the cases!!!

          Thx for the info and redirect. I'm definitely gonna try the 'lipless/press fit' method first. God knows I don't want to pull the motor/split the cases. And the worst part, it was 80 degrees here today...argh!

              hope you get it all fixed and i would say you will be ok with the press in seal and if not and you have to split the engine then you can build it up for even more power

                It worked! Or at least appears to have been successful. I replaced the Yamaha seal(with lip) with a lipless press fit seal I bought from a local bearing shop(no case splitting!). I've got about 30 miles on it since it went in, and all appears well. If anyone's interested, I can detail the procedure in a new post. Just reply to this and let me know. I'll be riding tmw! (cue homer simpson voice) Wooohooo!

                  Congrats on the fix! I'm sure many here would love to learn the details.

                    How about the brand name and P/N of the seal? It was the left side, correct?

                      Yup, it was the left side. TCM part # 32x48x7tc. I bought the LAST yamaha seal and had the guy at the bearing shop find a match. I'll post the procedure/try to send it to a moderator. I'm not quite sure how to do that.

                        right side leak

                        how about the right side? my xj been leaking there for a couple seasons now. But would really like to get her fixed? parts seal # etc. TIA

                          The last set of seals that I bought last year had the right side seal without the lip. It was just a press (hammer) in seal. The left side still had the lip on it. I bought the seals from Bikebandit, and they were both OEM Yamaha.
