So my 80 SG was running good when I put it away in November last year. Many things have happened since-Mother was in and out of the hospital and rehabilitation trying to regain her strength to move better. I changed jobs back in mid June, and have had shoulder issues for years that have kind of put a kink in my riding.I drained the carbs last year and kept the battery on a trickle charger. I went to start the bike last week and it started and warmed up fine but started popping when I was riding. The carbs were taken off, and I removed all the float bowls and have started to clean things up. I suspect the pilots were dirty so thye will be soaked in carb dip. I have all day tomorrow to work on the bike so will get it done.
Was good until last week

Pete, The one thing these bikes don't like is sitting still. Of course you are already well aware of that. If I remember correctly, you don't have ethanol free gas readily available to you where you are.2 - 80 LGs bought one new

No I dont and not being able to ride as much as I want to makes things hard. Last October I took a weeks vacation and rode my Kawasaki ZRX and the Yamaha several times. Neither bike likes to sit at all especially with todays fuel. Both bikes have carbs not the fancy fuel injection so takes a bit to maintain them. I have taken these carbs off so many times can almost do it blindfolded.1980 XS1100 SG

Good work draining the carbs over the winter, it goes without saying the tank was most likely full and fuel stabilizer was used during storage.
-Was the tank drained of gas that was in the tank during storage and replaced with fresh?
-Was the gas in the tank from storage when the popping started?
It's nice we both have a ZRX and a classic Yamaha ('82 Seca 750 for me) in the garage.Howard

No gas in oil-1st thing I checked. Tank was full of fuel and Stabil was added. Bonz-I should have drained the tank but didn't. I spent time cleaning the carbs today and put them back on the bike tonight but didn't start it-I will tomorrow after work.Yes the ZRX does get more attention though. Yes popping started with this tank- I will put it in my Jeep Grand Cherokee and fill it with fresh.Last edited by oldyam80sg; Today, 05:04 PM.1980 XS1100 SG
