    Idle jet

Has anyone filled the float bowls with carb cleaner in order to soak the idle jet for a couple of hours and help clean it? I have read via AI that one method of cleaning the idle jet without removing the carbs is to try this method. Thoughts/suggestions?

    Thanks

I don’t believe that method will be successful for this carburetor. I’m sure it’s a waste of effort. The carburetors are easy enough to remove and replace. Pull them and remove the bowls.

some CV carburetors have the pilot jets in the bowl. Not these.

What you may want to do is spray some carb cleaner into the hole in the bottom of the bowl. Be SURE you have safety glasses on so you don't get it in your eyes. I have seen that "port" get plugged from ethanol gas and the junk it creates in the carbs. That keeps the gas from getting to the jet.

          Thanks Ray.

If I drained the carbs, removed the tank, setup a dummy tank and ran carb cleaner through it into the carbs, and left for a couple of hours. Do you think that would work?
          Draining them again afterwards .
          Thanks

If you spray into the hole, you know if it's open or not. No guess, just facts.

When you say carb cleaner are you talking the type from a spray can? As in fill the bowls with that through the fuel line? Do not use carb cleaner! It's going to wreak havoc on your needle seat o-rings and maybe your rubber needle tips if you have those if it sits for that length of time. The AI you looked at may have pressed in needle seats which don't have o-rings.

You could put a shot of it through there and within a minute or two chase it with some gasoline, do not let it soak.

Take the carbs off, remove the jets and clean them. In my opinion AI hacks are exactly that. They can lead to hack jobs and more work replacing the parts the carb cleaner ruins. They find an easy way around without experience of the side effects.

Here's the question: Do you want to waste your time on a (hopefully) half fast fix or take the time to do it ONCE? Anybody who's been around multiple carb bikes will tell you to strip them all the way down and replace all the rubber bits inside, this of course after you soak the carb bodies in Berrymans Carb Dip OR use an ultrasonic cleaner to do the job. Whatever you do DO NOT use the brass parts out of a cheap carb rebuild kit, you'll never get it to run right with cheap knock off parts! Clean your old parts well and re use them.
