  • paint question

i've read the many tip sections on this subject, studied the books i can find, and can do a pretty fair job usually, but i'm doing something new (for me) this time. i'm going to paint the main body of my carbs, the float bowl and top cap are buffed to near chrome, and i think painting the carb body will make those parts stand out even more. but how do you get that really good, smooth as glass, factory-ish new car finish if you can't sand/paint/ repeat, repeat, repeat? there are way to many nooks and granies to be able to do that real light sanding.

when my wife asks how long this is going to take, and i say my target for completion is april, she asks which year. we repeat this weekly.

well if you take your time primer and put a few coats of paint on the parts and then clearcoat it and it will look good

      cleanliness

keep dust down as much as possible. wet down the walls and floor of the area your painting in,make sure to strain the paint with two strainers wear a painters suit and head sock and doctors gloves. that will elliminate a lot of particles right there. all the things are reasonable at auto paint supply store.

I did auto body repair and paint work for about 20 years when I was younger, so when it came time to paint my carb bodies, I cleaned them real well with soap and water, used an aluminum cleaner/prep by House of Color followed by an immediate water rinse. Let them dry, sat them on a narrow scrap of plywood on top of my trash barrel and sprayed them with a spray can of Rustolium gloss black. they came out a lot slicker than the tank fairing and fenders that were done in the 'proper way' (paper suit, hair net , parts grounded, positive pressure spraying area and floor wet).

Doesn't this job require a special type of paint or something? I can see gas getting on the carb bodies and creating all types of runs.

I use the spray can appliance epoxy for that sort of thing, comes out really glossy and and is tough and impervious to bout anything. Pratice on something that doesn't matter first, cause it has a few quirks, but is nice when you learn how.

The can I have on the shelf is from Krylon, but I think the last one I got was by Rustoleum. Got mine at Home Depot. Look for Appliance Epoxy.

It's not a two part thing, it's some kind of slovent process and takes a couple or days or more to really harden, heat cures it faster, kinda like enamel used to be.
