We're there guys. 145 mains, up one richer pilot from stock and remove the pods. BINGO! It runs like a striped ape. This is the first I've had it dialed in and humming. It scares me. I can't believe the way this thing pulls from 6500 to redline.

Thanks to all. This was a great thread, we covered a lot issues. Now I need some pods that will let it get air. Would one of you suggest a set that will work?

      hi Ed,
Well done on getting the bike running,
what type of pod filters did u have on it,
i found i had the same problem,
not sure of the brand, but mine were the small silver
pods, i bevelled the inside rubber with a knife
ill take a pic a little later, made a big difference,
from off idle to about 2500 rpm.

        Hey Edgo,

That's great, glad you got it ironed out, and hope your arms aren't too sore holding on!! Yeah, wicked power band up there isn't it!

Like Pete said, folks have trimmed off excessive lip from the pod filters which will let them breath better.

There was a thread a while back about which filters worked and which ones didn't, can't remember which brand, or where folks said they got them, like bikebandit, or MikesXS, or Partsnmore?

I'm running the ugly Unifilter tin can style, but they breath real well, foam rubber that can be cleaned and re-oiled. JCWhitney sells them around $45.00 set of four. However, I like the looks of the cone shaped ones instead, and will be getting some later!

.. hi Ed, like TC said the unifilters work but just dont look so good.
you could try the K&N oval tapered filters, they work the best and look the best. they can be cleaned when they get dirty and can last a good 15 years or more when taken care of. you can get them from any good cycle shop but the big bummer is the price is quite high, i paid $130 bucks for the set i have on my ugly bike. on the up side the performance is killer! and i'll never have to buy another set for that bike again

              GNEPIG,
You listed K&L and K&N parts. Which is the one that comes WITHOUT the engraving of the bearded guy on it?
Oh... I just looked again... It says K&N on it. Guess it's the K&L for me.

this is 1 of my pod filters
also cut a notch in the rubber where the
                air pilot is situated.
i like the look of the uni pod filters
i think they suit our style of bike
couldnt afford them at the time $30 each

My pods had that inside ridge and I cut some of it out. I'll try them out this weekend and see if it works. The pods that I am using are from Mike's XS650 so I was thinking that if they can pass enough air for a 325cc (half a 650) cylinder then one should be ok on a XS11 jug. The ridge in the opening would block the diaphram vent and the airjet. I had to glue the rubber to the base of the filter since the cuts I made partially ruined the attachment.

GNEPIG, is the filter on your above post a K&L or K&N?

...Hello Ed...it is a K&N air filter that I purchased from K&L supply. The part number for the K&N's from K&L is 19-6258 - comes in box of 4. Most cycle shops deal with the K&L supply co for parts for the older bikes and some inexpensive parts for newer bikes also. Call Barney's Yamaha (they won't be very far from you and the last time I dealt with these people, they were pretty nice and the last time I was there, they also had a cycle salvage)...they can get you these filters either from K&L, Tucker Rocky, Parts Unlimited or someplace like that. I have found K&L has these filters for the lowest price. Good luck.

I put my stock airbox back on just to see how it would run. I drilled three one inch holes in the bottom of the box opposite where the snorkel comes in. It runs great so I think I'll keep in there for now. The plugs look good too so I think I'm set for now.

.. Very good! I have the stock airbox on my red bike, with 8 1/2" holes drilled opposite of the snorkel but I also have the K&N stock filter replacement that I had purchased from K&L Supply for about $38.00. If you make this change also, you will notice a bigger difference and this will be all you need - unless you like the look of the individual filters, the stock airbox is pretty good, especially when you get caught in the rain.
