There is also a “washer move” covered extensively. It should keep the issue from ever happening. You will avoid failure by shifting deliberately/firmly.
When I ruined my 2nd gear, new gear wheels were available and I accomplished the “washer move” when I replaced them.

Hey guys thanks again for the info, I asked my son about what he fixed in the 1980's bike, he something something must have let go in the tranny as the teeth were broke in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear lol.

jetmechmarty Yes I am finding that I have to shifting deliberately/firmly. even on a smooth shift it clunks, but if its an easy or slow shift if it catches the gears, that's not just in second but all, but if its a deliberately/firmly shift its generally pretty good. I'm going to try just tightening up the clutch a bit.

Also i'm not having issues or anything with that u-joint I was just wondering more so if there was a grease fitting.

            Thanks everyone

I went down to the local Napa today and they have that u-joint in stock. Here in Canadian Napa's the number is listed as part#1-0028. It apparently is a common u-joint for PTO's. It is also found on 71-73 Dastuns and 81-84 Toyota trucks. The supplier for Napa here is Neapco. If you go to Neapco.com you can find it in their stock and read the measurements to be sure yourself. They sell for 38 bucks (canuk). The numbers on neapco's site are the same as the Napa numbers I have here. Hope this helps.

Just make sure that quality NAPA part isn't made in You_Know_Where.

Hey thanks man good to know. Cool seeing another Canadian on here. At one time I spent a lot of time on the west coast Alberta,BC. my son use to work on the rigs out in Drayton Valley and I believe the parts for my 1980 bike came from somewhere Alberta.

Question for any of you Canadian guys, I looking for as shift panel cover gasket, Can't find any in Canada. Wondering if you guys would have any leads on where I may find one in Canada. I found some in the usa so I can always get one from there. I'm going to check late today with the yamaha dealer but I doubt they can still get any.

Not hard to make your own as a lot of gaskets for 40+ year-old bikes are made of unobtainium. Link doesn't refer directly to XS11s but the theory is universal. I make my own regularly with consistent success. Saves $$$ too.

Hey LenB, yes I agree, as I have made plenty in the past as well, I was just hoping I could find one for 30/40 bucks whatever and have it to my door, easiest right lol, If I can't get one I'll just get the stuff to make one, its just more of a pain in the ass going that route. But it maybe the route I need to take. Thanks

Smear a little EPgrease on the shift panel and lay it on the gasket material. Lift it up, and you have your pattern! Sharp knife or scissors and about 10 minutes of time. I have a hole punch set I use for the bolt holes. !/4" is VERY close to 6mm, and works great.
