    Another Brake Hangup

So my front brake is dragging and taking a test drive locally I was lucky to get home. If I crack the bleeders it rolls free so I'm sure it's the splooge valve. It will happen again in short order. My worry is I can't seem to get the reservoir off without possibly destroying it and or being able to get a correct o ring let alone reinstalling it. I have this type, not the one that came on it with the pull back bars (1980).

Is there a replacement master I can get that isn't junk?

You don't need to remove the nylon reservoir bowl to clean the spooge hole.

Just find the tiny (smaller) hole in he bottom of the reservoir and push a fine wire through it.

If after you clean out the spooge hole and you still have brake drag you may have to clean under your caliper piston seals.

PO says he rebuilt calipers last year and when I crack the bleeders it frees instantly I’m hoping it’s just the splooge.

so the holes in the reservoir are directly over the splooge?

I can’t seem to find a hole. I’m using an 011 guitar wire. Poking around for a while no luck.

You will need to remove the plastic reservoir completely to gain access to the spooge hole, and to clean it, a thin wire is necessary. Twist, pull, and pry it off, it is tough and shouldn't break.

Boy you were right thank you for that advice. That thing was plugged up solid. I used a zero .011 guitar string to clean it up. Cleaned everything up will attempt to use the old O-ring. I put a little bit of ultra gray along the flat area of the master in case it leaks.

A quality replacement as you had asked.

A trick I learned when using the old O- Ring is to wrap the reservoir with a couple of layers of Teflon tape, lube it and reinstall. I've used the white and the yellow type with success.

May seem like overkill but get into the habit of completely refreshing all of the brake fluid every couple of years and you won't have to deal with that crud anymore. Invest in a mity vac or something similar and it will make doing the job much easier.

I do have a Mighty Vac....system had been converted to DOT 5 but PO who rebuilt the master did not clear the spooge. If I do have any problems in the future, I will go back to DOT 3-4.

I'm not sure there is a "going back". Have you tried washing DOT5 off any parts? Seems hopeless to me.

Yes, clean with denatured alcohol, rebuild everything, flush lines with it. I know it's extremely difficult to manage in a painting environment but you just have to be thorough here. I've done it on cars.
