    Headlight problem xs 1100

So I got a 1981 xs 1100. When I purchased it everything was great, the headlight was just dim and the low beam didn’t turn on so I figured I’d upgrade. Now that I have everything wired up nothing is getting power. The tach and speedometer work, but there’s not even a headlight indicator on. Replaced the reserve lighting thing but I feel like there’s something else. Any help would be appreciated.

    'Lo! (^_^)

First things first....You do know that in order fOaR the headlight to actually turn on, the engine gots to be running, right? (O_o)

It's just the way things are set up to wurky straight from the factory. (O_O)

UNLESS someone's been in there befOaR you and set it up do otherwise with bypasses and such...(_Oo)

    Start here-

Download the repair manual with the actual eceletrical diagrams at the back. (^_^)

Iffin' yur gonna keep the bike you're gonna need it and now is as good a time as ever to have it when others start chiming in with questions about have you checked here or there or this thingy or that one. (´_`)

Also would be noice to know if the bike is a STD or Special model....it's impor'unt!

Okay first off yes I knew the bike needs to be on lol it’s been a hassle taking the tank on and off every time to test it. And found the relay but can’t find any good replacements. Everything I’ve found is used.

This is how you eliminate the Lighting Reserve Unit. I did it on my 78 and never looked back.

Here is a better Reserve Lighting Elimination schematic complete with wire colors. This works great.

Current paths for the high/low beam switch with the reserve lighting module eliminated.

CarlosMuro05 - If the stock halogen bulb has been replaced with and LED unit that may explain the tricks your headlight is doing. Just follow DEEBS11 excellent advice and bypass the RLU and you'll be fine.

DEEBS11 - got an H4 LED a while back and will be making up some jumpers to bypass the RLU in case I want to change back the mod in future. Did something similar to my '83 Kawasaki 750 last year and I'm much more visible in traffic now.

LenB, my bike is a Standard with the rectangular headlight. I was able to find a later H4 type LED Pathfinder bulb. Very bright. Had to use a later XS11 bulb holder to install the H4 LED bulb. I can also turn the headlight on and off with the custom wired right hand switch.
