  • 1978 XS1100E 2H7 with 1980 SG Carbs

    Hi All

    I've bought a non-runner 2H7 XS1100E that I am slowly sorting.

I've stripped the carbs to clean and rebuild, but I noticed the carbs aren't from the 78 - they're 1980 carbs from a 3U9 XS1100SG

What I want to know is are they compatible, and do I need make any alterations to jets etc?

    Many thanks ... Shaun

Should work if carbs are clean with stock genuine parts. The 80's bikes were de-tuned for more midrange power over peak power but those carbs should work fine.

      'Lo Fizzwizz, ( ^_^)/

      Yup...I second DEEBS11's view. ( ´∀`)b

From what I've experienced, swapping entire carb banks from different years wurky just fine. (*^‿^*)

I mean the same basic spacing of the carb banks and the intakes connected to the the engine make it do-able. Especially if the swap is from a Standard-to-Standard or Special-to-Special. SOMEtimes there's issues with whether or not the Vent lines are needed/used or not but there's work-a-rounds for either condition. (-‿◦)

The BIG problem is when folks start swapping jets/parts between carbs of different models/years. ヾ(゚д゚)ノ゛

      Lookey here-

      https://xs11.club/forum/maintenance/...ls-and-jetting

They are NOT all the same and not knowing this and swapping parts can end up in a hot mess. (/_\)

BUT, you stated you have a "non-runner", it's my belief that most times these bikes END UP in that state and being sold to the next person is because the PO failed to get the bike to run like the Super Bike it IS. This is usually after they've made considerable efforts to GET it that-a-way but in the end failed. I mean after chasing through the electrical/ignition system and trying just about anything and everything they could think of and/or appealing to wisdom of others who own similar makes/models. (´・_・`)

As you are in the beginning of that process, it is my UNSHAKEABLE BELIEF that where things went off the rails to never come back in these situations is that the owner(s) purchased and installed the Taiwan Cheeepe carb kits offered on Ebay. I have direct experience with this myself and found both the Jets as well as the float needles/seat do NOT and WILL not result in the super bike experience you are likely striving for. (ಠ_ಠノ)

      My recommendation? (O_o)7

Assume the cheeepees are already installed and get rid of'em. I mean, if the PO COULD have gotten it to run like a super bike he wouldn't have been keen on selling it in the first place. (⊙︿⊙)

Then buy the proper and genuine Mikuni jets from "Jet's-R-Us". If you buy new float needles/seats it is CRITICAL that you do NOT assume that setting the float height to the recommended distance above the gasket surface will actually result in the fuel level being at the correct level inside the float bowl. ( ゚ _ゝ゚)

Just trying to ensure you get off on the right foot......(b^_^)b
