  • Vacuum advance making noise!

The bike hasn't seemed like it's been "up to par" power wise as of late and I got to digging around, sure enough there's a split in the vacuum line running to the advance unit. It being a Sunday and with my camp being in a remote area I'm going to need to wait until tomorrow to locate a new vacuum line so I taped over the bad spot and THIS started happening!

Boy, the bike is back to running up to snuff but the tach is bouncing all over the place and this rattle sure doesn't sound good! As you can see in the video the advance plate is jumping around quite a bit which is creating the noise. I'm thinking I need to clean up the advance mechanism but figured I'd ask here as a sanity check, any input would be appreciated!

The only thing I can suggest is to check that the vac advance line is connected to the number 2 carb and NOT to the number 2 rubber manifold boot.

      Duh! Yeah, that was it.

When I bought the bike the previous owner had about three different tee's patched into the vacuum lines, my guess is because the octopus had been removed at some point. In order to simplify that setup I ran one petcock vacuum line to intake boot three and the other to intake boot two, I obviously put it back together with the petcock and advance lines switched.

Should I have kept the tee setup and just draw the needed petcock vacuum off carb three? Or was it carb two... Don't remember, it was almost a year ago.

It's been a long time since I worked on a standard so wait for a second opinion to come in before relying on my OLD memory to make any changes!. If I remember correctly, the standard models didn't have an octy. The vacuum petcocks used vacuum lines from the #2 and #3 manifolds. Left petcock vacuum from manifold 2 and right petcock vacuum from manifold 3.

Bob is 100% correct. Standards didn't have the vacuum 'octy' because they have vacuum operated petcocks. The Specials had manual petcocks due to limited space, so the octy was used as a sure fuel shutoff.

Thanks guys, that's what I needed! Sounds like I've got it rigged up as it should be.
