This is all starting to sink into my mind. The front fenders are the same width, yes? I know there is a rib on the Standard fender. Maybe the closer tube proximity is a result of kicking the fork forward. I think both front ends are the same width but the trees change the angle of the fork tube like Red stated before.

Here's an interesting picture for you Deebs. I'm holding the shafts in alignment, one on top of the other. (standard on top of the special)... This really shows how significant the difference is. I'm not going to pretend that I understand the effect it would have on the steering and rake, but as Red Bandit said, it's gotta change some geometry...right?

I don't have a standard fender to measure but the forks spacing from center appears to be the same on both.

The wheels and spacers are the same width for both Std and Special, the mounting holes on the fenders are drilled different between the two, they have different forward tilt angles. The fender width is the same between the two.

the yokes (tripple tree's) have different offsets, if you use the special forks you must use the special yokes, same with the standard.
and the ringed parts in the picture are footrest brackets but don't know what bike !!!!!

That was my thinking too but after III looked over my 80 standard I didn't see them.

I also don't think they are for an XS1100. It's curious how they ended up in a box of XS1100 parts. I hope they can go to someone who can use them though... whatever they are for!

Rake and Trail are the same on Specials and Standards, the Triple Trees compensate for the forward axle mounting on the Special.
Footpegs look like an XS650 maybe.

                    Rake: 29 degrees 30

                    Trail:130mm / 5.1"

I think the mystery foot peg mounts are Yamaha Virago. Check the pictures. Maybe the mount holes are too close together....

I once had a Virage 920 (forget what year) and the rear pegs mount up the same way they do on my XS, to that triangular cast aluminum piece that braces the lower part of the frame. Gotta admit, the mounts shown above look AWFULLY familiar, I just don't remember from where.

These right angle corners are very distinctive.

I have read that Standard triple trees and Special triple trees are different but I don't suspect that is true. The fork tubes, calipers and lowers are different. Crazy Steve makes no mention of triple tree differences in his writings on model differences. The main difference between front ends is the fact that the Special front axle is mounted forward of the slider and the Standard is mounted in the middle. This changes wheelbase length for better ride geometry over bumps in the case of the Special. Good for sidecar rigs also.
You are right about the pain in the @ss that removing powdercoat can be. I had some handle bars done for my MNS and the guy put so much on that I couldn't get the plastic throttle sleeve on. Ended up having to strip them with MEK. I have a sandblasting cabinet and that doesn't even get the coating off. The only thing I could find that actually softens it is the MEK and a wire brush. Once you get most of it off you can then clean things up with a sandblasting with aluminum oxide 100 grit.
