got a fuel tank from bike boneyard to refinish while i continue to ride...came with cap on and no key....how can i get into this thing without screwing it up....or do i just need to take to locksmith

.. under the front of the cap is a skinny button about the same length as the lock mechanism use a straight blade screw driver and push on it the same time your pushing down on the cap and it should open, might take a coulpe of tries
.. there is a thread on rekeying this lock it's real easy look for it
cost $0 bucks
unless you have a standard then a good mechanic at any cycle shop should be able to "pic" it for about $5 bucks
Hey pgg it's a standard not a special. Get the # off the lock and maybe you'll get lucky. On the TeXSive ride a while back two us us tried our keys in the others bike mine would open his tank but not start it, his would start mine but not open the tank, both 78E's.
Even I, the Great and Powerful OZ, haven't figured out a way to pop the cap on a standard.

The tank key cylinder has three gates, but the ignition uses five. Easier to randomly match three positions that five.

Odd... But after many years, there's a little "wiggle room" involved. Like your first car... remember how you could pull the key outta the ignition with it still runnin?

key # i need is 3934 if anyone has one i'll pay....or if someone could make a copy off of there key it would be greatly appreciated..i'll pay whatever is fair....
You can just take that number to your local Yamaha shop, and they should have a key cutter that they can make you one from that #!

Most of my keys are copies of the original, hence no numbers. Checked one of my bikes at work... had key #3939. Since the tank lock doesn't use all the gates as the ignition lock, my #3939 may wiggle your #3934 enough to do the trick. If no one has an exact match by Monday, I'll make a copy and PM you for your address.

Prometheus just because the key that you have is close to the code of the gas tank cap doesn't mean that the key cuts are close to being the same.
The simplist thing for stevo to do is call the local locksmith tell them the code # and let them cut him a new key. The locksmith shops here in Victoria charges about $15.00 + to cut a new key from the codes including the cost of the key.
Stevo if you have a small, thin bladed flat screwdriver and a heavy duty paper clip you can try to pop the cap yourself by inserting the screwdriver in to the keyhole putting a little pressure on the cap, (like you are opening the cap with a key just enough to cause the tumbler pins to sit lightly against the side of the cylinder) straighten the paperclip and stick end of paperclip into key hole, push paperclip up towards the tumbler pins at about a 70% angle and with the paperclip pull/push across the tumbler pins and giggle the screwdriver to open the lock. The old gas cap locks have only 4 tumbler pins and are fairly easy to pick open. Screwdriver to the bottom of lock, paperclip to ward the top of lock.

My bike is newly acquired and I was going to have a spare made today anyway. I figured for the price of a key(that might be close) and a 37 cent stamp, his prob might be solved.
