Agreed. I think what is happening over time is that the formulation for these cleaners is changing. Here in the states the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is always forcing manufacturers to come up with more environmentally friendly components. What is carb cleaner here in the states may not necessarily be the same animal in the UK.

True cajun31-I read that Berrymnans carb cleaner in the little pail will turn parts black after a while. Maybe new formula? I used to buy Gunk carb cleaner in the little pail. Now I use a can of fuel injection cleaner and acetone that I mix together in a 5 gallon metal paint can I get at work. I never soak any rubber in it though. I still use the carb cleaner in a can for the heavy stuff..

The Berryman's in the gallon can is what I use to soak the entire carb. I disassemble them as far as I can then put all the parts in the tray that is in the gallon can. I have left said carbs in there for quite a while with no ill effects on the rubber components. As a disclaimer I will say that when I rebuild carburetors all those rubber parts get replaced including the butterfly shaft seals. I would say that removing as many of those rubber parts as possible before submerging the carbs is what should be done if you are thinking of reusing those components. The reason the Berryman's turn the metal black or should I say darker is after a lot of use. When you use a new can there is no discoloration. I have never used the I believe 5 gallon can of Berryman's so can not personally say that it harms rubber. Others have commented over the years that it destroys rubber.

I used some silicone O-ring grease used for diving equipment. that I had bought. on E bay. A little bit of that and the new O-ring and float seat popped right in.

Good evening gents. I'm finding this carb thread very interesting. In 2006, I replaced my '82 XJ1100 carbs with a fuel injection system. This modification was challenging and educational. It's been trouble free except for a rusted gas tank which destroyed the fuel pump. Trying to keep 4 carbs in running order became a nightmare, esp. with the changing gas formulas. I added an O2 sensor to the exhaust to run a closed loop system for elevation changes and the temp sensors take care of cold weather changes.

Ah fuel injection!! no need to play with the carbs. I swear my next bike will be fuel injected. Taken the carbs off my 80 SG so many times. Cant wait until I put the Kawasaki GPZ 1100 carbs on and see what happens.
