So been cleaning the carbs on my 80 SG and everything is being looked at closely as I clean them. The float valve seats-# 2 carb the seat just dropped in. I took it out and looked at the O-ring and decided to replace it as it never has been replaced. I took a pick to remove it and the o ring broke in 2 pieces so it was time. I had a brand new O-ring I bought from partszilla and installed it. This time it did not go in as easy. What is the preferred method to install the new float valve seat?

yep, the O rings go hard and brittle, then they leak giving the impression its the float valve.

I bought spare float valves from georgefix on E- bay. The current ones are in good shape.

Maybe I could put the float valve seats in the freezer for a bit to shrink the O-rings?

Putting them in the freezer might shrink them a couple of thousands of an inch, that's it, not to mention making the oring harder and less flexible once it touches the metal. It seems counter intuitive but in this case it's a matter of "brute force and ignorance" to get the job done. You could get one part of the oring onto the widest part of the barrel and hold it there with your finger and use something rounded like a pin with point ground off to help pry it on. A little bit of oil might help too but it would make things more slippery for holding the part of the ring you want to stay on the widest part. I've used a jewelers screwdriver before but don't tell the purists!

I've had success by wiping a light layer of Vaseline/grease on them and they slide right in. Whatever lube you used dissolves harmlessly.

I always use O-ring lubricant when installing a fit like that. A dry fit could tear the O-ring.

DEEBS11-like that idea of the grease. LAB3-I use no tool to get them in. Just asking for trouble. I did get O rings last year on E bay that were not correct They wouldn't work even with a drop of light oil on them. The seller said I thought they were correct guess I was wrong.

a drop of engine oil will do, they just drop in, done it many of times.

When I am at that stage to put those in I always have a can of carb cleaner spray sitting there so I just spritz them and the seat with that and then quickly slide the seat home. The carb cleaner dries up quite quickly.

with no more time then it takes to get the carb back together and submerged in gas that particular o ring does not suffer from a small amount of carb cleaner.

I would still prefer to use a drop of oil though

I found an interesting article concerning carb cleaner vs brake cleaner. Not that I am suggesting brake cleaner for anything, but cleaning brakes. Was a good read. Carb Cleaner Vs Brake Cleaner - Can You Substitute Them? | FixandTroubleshoot
