  • carb float bowl screws

So those that have cleaned their carbs multiple times I have a couple questions. The float bowl screws are now stripped. I need to know what size they are. The threads are worn out so do I use a longer screw and a lock nut if there is room? I' m sure I 'am not the only one who has had this problem. What is the fix and no JB weld. I cannot use a heli-coil because there is no room.

Be more specific. Are they all stripped or just one or two? I have had success with going up one size on them and using a die to cut new threads. If you go that route then get longer screws as well. I have converted many of mine to longer allen head screws.

Just to be clear on something -If I was to go one size up on the threads, then you use a tap. A die is used to put threads on a screw. I used a tap and die set my entire working life. I could use a M6 tap and a longer M6 screw instead of the stock M5 screw.

I apologize for my first comment. I meant tap and yes one size up. If the heads of the screws rub the float bowl then take a grinder and just grind a small amount of material off of the screw head side. If you go with allen head screws they fit just fine. Doesn't take a lot of torque to keep the bowl sealed and going a bit longer then the stock screws will keep them for stripping. Over tightening them is obviously what strips them to begin with.

Put a brand new longer Allen head screw and tighten it up and it worked.

I did that initially and it wasn't long before I was doing the repair I described. You probably only have a few threads left that are now sufficing. As long as you don't have to go back in the carbs for fine tuning you may be fine for a while.

                  For future reference:

I have made several repairs with this stuff. No, it's not for head bolts or spark plugs. I think it's appropriate for a stripped fastener on a carburetor.
