Turns out - it was the old wire splices from the generator to connectors that were oxidized to heck...so a few careful butt splices later -- 14.5 at idle!
Very cool that it was an easy fix! I've got my replacement stator yesterday morning but unfortunately the death of a close friends wife had me on the road for 500 miles without a headlight yesterday. Hopefully the swap will happen this weekend, at least I made the trip without trouble.

Cool, I'll have to get in touch with them on mine. The used replacement stator I put on works but as mentioned, 40+ yr old electrical parts have a limited life.
