For years I have used a single brake caliper up front with stainless braided lines. I took off the right caliper years ago for some reason, and now want to remount it if I can find it. I have the hardware brand new in a package along with the brake washers new from Russell. I also have a new junction block. The junction block -do I use a longer banjo bolt with the 2 holes and attach bolt, washer, brake line, washer and 2nd brake line washer into junction block? i can't remember and manual does not show this (at least mine doesn't).

I found the correct caliper on E bay as I don't know what happened to the original. I ordered a new double banjo belt and have the stainless brake line that I originally installed.1980 XS1100 SG

Well, I got the caliper the other day. Piston is a nightmare to try and get out. Going to try it today as I have more time.1980 XS1100 SG

Techniques I have used in order of preference:
(1) Borrow the back Master Cylinder
(2) Connect a grease gun
(3) Compressed air @90 psi - put a rag around it to catch the heavy bullet.-Mike

My go to,
Put a 10mm bolt in the banjo bolt hole, loosen up the end of your grease gun a little(the silver part that surrounds the end you put in the fitting). Loosen up the bleeder valve, install grease gun, and pump. piston will come out without killing anything.Ray Matteis

Just to add to Ray's method, I usually fill the caliper with brake fluid before installing the 10MM bolt, that way less grease to clean up. Works either way though.2H7 (79) owned since '89

I bought a M10 x 1.25 bolt at Home Depot since I could not find my numerous metric bolts in the garage. I used the grease gun to get the piston out. I cleaned up everything with brake cleaner and reinstalled the piston back into the caliper. The only issue so far is the brake pads may be slightly dragging and the brake hose is not yet attached. Do the brake pads ever so slightly touch the disc when not pressed? What retracts them back into the caliper? Does the brake fluid wipe on the sides of the piston and keep them lubricated to move back into the caliper?1980 XS1100 SG

Hopefully you removed and cleaned the crud out from behind the caliper piston seal, otherwise it may not "roll" properly, which retracts the brake pads.
Yes, the pads do drag slightly on the rotors when the lever is not pressed, but too much is not good.Last edited by bikerphil; 04-10-2022, 08:03 PM.2H7 (79) owned since '89

I took out the seal and cleaned that and everything the sleeve goes into including the groove. The grease got everywhere. I took out the seal before using the brake cleaner. I also ordered new EBC brake pads.1980 XS1100 SG
