I am curious what this is also, I have a starting issue,,,,maybe put a jumper wire between the terminals and try to start? Check the wiring diagram for the bike, which bike is it? Just use the wire color and follow the diagram to the part..............who knows what this is?

It’s the starter solenoid. Test by looking for battery on the side not cabled to the battery when you hit the start button. Jeff

yes, it is the starter relay. When it clicks, it is trying to send battery voltage to the starter. Is the starter cranking the engine? If so, the relay/solenoid is working. A weak or dead battery may supply enough voltage to make the relay click, but not enough to turn the starter.

I asked the bike shop to test the solenoid. He said it was probably good and told me to cross the posts after installing. If it sparks the starter is ****ed, if nothing the starter is bad, if it starts the solenoid is bad or a ground wire.
Mine did nothing. I had another starter put it in and it starts. Good to go.

Are the starter brushes getting extra wear from the starter clutch slipping?

The brushes do wear. I've rebuilt two XS starters, and it's easy. Took me about three hours on the first one, and about 1.5 hours for the second. I have rebuilt electric motors and generators before, so there was a little knowledge already there.
