  • Anyone have this happen with led’s??

I have no idea why this is happening. Electronic flasher installed, diode in place. I’ve been working on this for a few weeks now, and I thought I had a solution. My rear taillight frame spots are pretty much useless (tabs are pretty much gone), so I wanted to mount some LED’s. I put led bulbs in the stock signals, just to test it, and I have new rear signals to put in once this actually works. However, SWING AND A MISS, EVERY. TIME.

Edit - I can’t upload a video of it. It CONSTANTLY flickers, yet will dim…but never goes out.

I put the stock flasher in, and the signals are BRIGHT, as they should be, but don’t flash. I have two electronic flashers - a two prong from Napa, and a three-prong from autozone (novita EP36), but that doesn’t work at all. I’ve tried every combination with the flasher plug and the Napa two-prong plug, and nothing works. I’m going to try the three prong quick…

Also - only the left turn signal (acewell speedo / tach) stays on. This is beyond me…

Verify that you have a GOOD GROUND to ALL of the lights! The rear lights had a ground wire that went from the bolt to a frame ground on the stock unit, because of the rubber mounts for the lamps. I'll need to go look at the flasher I'm using, but on my '79 Special the lamps work well, even with the engine not running.

Thanks for the input - I definitely have a good ground! The incandescents worked. I even tried to get a “clean” ground for the rear signals…didn’t work. I’m so bummed…

But why would the lights be bright when the stock flasher relay was on there?? One of the many things I’m trying to understand…I know the bulbs aren’t garbage, because they were BEAMING with the incandescent relay. I’m going to try to put my brand new lights in temporarily; see what happens…

The stock flasher is designed for conventional filament type bulbs, it requires a higher load to collapse the circuit. It stays on because the LED's don't provide that load needed, they draw very little power, so the electronic flasher is needed.
The 3 prong flasher won't work with our systems so put that one aside.
The yel/grn wire at the flasher is not needed with the two prong electronic flasher, it is for the self cancel feature.
Try reversing the brn and the brn/wht connectors in the plug and see if that works.

I know this is a stupid question, but should I ground the ring terminal and tap into it with the ground wire on the new rear lights, or can I just straight up connect to the ground wire without the ring terminal?? I’m using (or would LIKE to use) a fabricated “L” bracket to mount the new lights, using the bolt that goes through the grab-bar (12mm, towards the back).

Update: hooked the new rear LED’s up. They flash, just as weak as the other bulbs did. But now, the fronts don’t work at all. They’ll flash quickly once, then die. The left indicator in the speedo comes on regardless of which direction I push. I’m going to end up wasting a rare 4 days in a row off just trying to get these to work, when I planned on riding. WHY WILL THESE NOT WORK.

Again - I’m using new led signals from revival cycles in the rear, stock flashers with led bulbs in the front.

here’s the flasher I’m using…would this have anything to do with it??

Now 15 hours into this in the last two days, and NOTHING is working. I think I’m going to say “&#*% it”, and just rewire the entire damn thing with a motogadget unit, which I definitely can’t afford, but I’m beyond tired of this. I have no idea what else to try.

Do you have another 2 prong electronic flasher you can try?

Nope…no one around here sells anything but the one I have. I’m still exhausting options. The weird thing was - as soon as I grounded the rear signals via loop terminals, just like the stock signals, the front signals stopped working. I took one loop off, and one signal started to do the usual garbage that it was doing before. I’ll tell you this - I am never, EVER trying this $&@# on another stock bike with an aftermarket speedo. This is beyond frustrating…usually I can walk away and figure it out the next day, but this has been nothing short of a wrench-thrower.

So your saying the front signals work normally with the 2 prong electronic flasher when the backs are unhooked?

The right front works…sort of. Same flickering nonsense. The left one won’t work at all.
