  • Pickup coils ate themselves today.

    Not sure why, or how bad, but I won't give up.
    it happened at about 65mph. Just started sputtering and backfiring and then died. I look down and see this.

    Got home and took the cover off. OMG.
    looks like the vacuum advance came loosec and it over rotated.

          Yeah I've had that bolt out a few times. Last time I think I put loctite on it. Must not have torqued it enough.

            That's a failure mode I don't think any of us has seen before.

            Easy to diagnose.

            Hope it's easy to fix.

                    Wow, that's a sad looking disaster. Do you need some parts? I think I have them in my parts bin. I replaced two bikes, my XJ and XS 11 ignition systems with a GM DIS unit when I fuel injected these motorcycles. Let me know and we'll work the details.

                      So sorry on that issue! Definitely not something that loses clearance in there on its own, I wouldn’t even hesitate to use red Loctite as it still can be removed when needed. However, thinking Loctite was used versus putting Loctite on it could explain a lot. Do you see any on the threads? Usually fairly easy to see even a small speck of it as residual.
