  • XS1100SH Brake calipers install.

I got new pads and rebuilt the calipers on my SH. I noticed they are supposed to go in and an angle, however when I install the pads I'm about 1/16 off of the mounting bolt hole. If I installed the caliper first then pads, I cant cant get them to slide in. Is there a better way to do this?

Banshee have you checked the BOLT the special pads hang on is straight ? they often get bent and cause problems.

          I usually:

          (1) Use a C-clamp and a block of wood to retract the caliper piston fully.
          (2) Install the pads into the calipers so they are hinging freely on the clevis pin.
          (3) Side the caliper and pads over the brake disc and wiggle everything to get the tabs on the brake pads to slide into the slots in the forks.
          (4) Install the mounting bolt that fastens the caliper to the fork. You have to juggle things to get the washers in place as you slide the bolt into place.

I suspect you might not have the tabs on the brake pads inserted into the slots on the forks [step (3)] .

I've tried this, my piston is fully inserted. They are in the forks but do not align

I didn't see your picture until after I posted.

You have the right hand caliper on the left hand fork.

The bleeder screw should be at the top.

That is the bleeder hole it just has masking on top still that I haven't removed.

I just realized your bleeder screw hole is probably still taped from a painting operation.

                    I don't see anything wrong.

The mounting screws on either side are off. I think it might be the cheap amazon pads I'm using. I got them for $17 for the while bike. They work good on the rear. They might just be too thick on the thicker side of the slant.

                        Flat spring is installed correctly?

                        Grasping for ideas.

Yes, I just took the wheel off and reassembled it. It has to be the pads. I'm guessing wrong angle.

Ok it's my idiotness. Wrong set of pads. The slope was the opposite of what I should have been.

Side note, isn't this a retarded pad design? Why cant they be flat?

I was going to suggest that on my second post, but I looked up the part number and found it was the same for both sides.

At least you have it figured out now.
