  • instructional video taping about to begin...

'buying a 4 wheel vehicle in October (finally) and 'have long-overdue maintenance to perform on the '80 XS11SG:

1)Front and rear brake pad install
    2)s.s. brake line installation (finally)
3)oil (& filter) change: engine, final drive, etc
    4)tune up and carb sync
    5)replacing clutch plates and springs
6)'changing front end with LG (fork tubes, fender, etc "tweeked")

...and all of it will be videotaped, and later transfered to DVD. Anybody have "requests" or suggestions? 'was also thinking about 'digging' into the LG tranny to see if I could fix it...

I am thinking of asking Pat Kelly and/or DiverRay if they want to be part of this - since they are 50 times the mechanic I ever will be...

I WOULD LIKE ONE ALSO. ESPECIALLY THE ONE ON THE TRANNY REPAIR. SO IF YOU MAKE TWO, ONE ON THE CARBS , AND ONE ON THE TRANNY THAN I WILL TAKE THEM BOTH.

        Ron,
My E is in need of the 2nd gear fix.
        Ultimatum from my Wife:
"No work on any bikes until the truck runs!"
I'm 5 bolts from pulling the engine. I already have the crank kit and all gaskets. What I needs is a can of gumption.

              video

You the man Uncle Spot, if you can pull together even basic videos on common repairs that will be better than Yamaha ever did and a great help for the future of all xs, xj's-1100. All the visual learners in the group would greatly benefit, and besides it keeps these machines on the road that much longer. I have built many styles of surfboards and it couldn't be learned from books, but a visual and hands-on approach that videos help with. Keep us posted and my xj needs the 2nd gear fix and clutch fix soon. Regards, Mike in Sun Diego

1, 3, and 4 I've done several times on this SG. So a video on this would be fairing easy...

2, 5, and 6 I've done several times on 7 different Harleys and several BMWs - 'would like a "visual" 'translation' on the XS11 - IOW do a 'dry run through' and then videotape when I was 'comfortable' with the procedure - that is the main reason I asked if DiverRay or Pat Kelley would be interested in "contributing" with assistance on this... they've got expertice that would be invaluable to this project.
I am open to all suggestions and advice...

A video of these procedures would be invaluable to all of us. Seeing it done is 1000's of times better than reading and just looking at pictures. Count me in I definetly want one.

                      Well,

I documented my tearing down and rebuilding of the 79SF carbs I worked on at the beginning of the summer. Then summer hit, and I don't have an air conditioned garage, so I haven't done much more on the bike, but now that the weather has cooled off, I plan on getting back to it, and doing more on this project as well! Will be interesting to see what we come up with!?

                            Vidie production

Unless anyone has any objection, I would volunteer to cover brake systems... provided that I can get my brother's camera to record to the VCR)
I do have several production suggestions for this video/cd, if I may.
Not that I'm Cecil B. DeMille, but just several things I found helpful when I made instructional / training vidies for my platoon whilst in the army.
1: Have a lesson plan. This gives direction and helps prevent leaving anything out.
2: Cue cards or handy index cards help keep you in sequence. (We aren't professionals here, so I don't think anyone would really care. Being thorough is the goal)
3: Give a bit of the background physics... the "why fors?" and the "how comes?". Explaining how something is done is fine. Giving detail as to why and how the mechanism actually works promotes better understanding of the concepts involved
4: Though I'd love to have a background score of Mozart or Rossini, music may tend to drown out the verbal instructions, but on the plus side, may also drown out the words I say when I pinch a finger with a vise-grips.
                            On that note...
5: The home mechanic may have his wife, girlfriend, or children assisting him in his work while viewing the vidie. Tailor your "mechanic's language" accordingly. (Advice from a retired infantryman who knows all the words, and then some!)
6: Remember your target audience. For some people this may be the first bike they've ever worked on. What may be a simple operation for you, is astrophysics for them.
7: If videotaping by yourself (which I probably would be doing most of the time) have a monitor hooked up to the camera to ensure that what you want shown is actually on the screen. This can be as simple as mounting the camera on top of a TV. When speaking directly to the camera, an occasional glance at the TV to verify placement is OK, but to continously cast your gaze to the side makes one look like they have a "Lazy Eye" or a nevious tic.
8: Provided a list of the tools and materials involved (10mm wrench, snapring pliers, Permatex, etc)

Have I ruined everyones fun yet? I hope not. Just things that I have learned along the way.
One further note: You may want to submit a lesson outline for others to critique and add to. Simple reason.... you may be leaving something important out. Example: On a recent post concerning brake pad squeal, I stated to take a file and scrape off the glazed that had built up on the pad. Pat Kelly then posted about bevelling the edges, which I forgot to mention. Having others review your lesson outline ahead of time would help ensure complete coverage of the subject. This would also save whomever is editing the vidies from having to arrange and title: "Prometheus Does Brakes, (with additional footage and commentary from Pat "Beveler" Kelly and Randy "Spacer" Rago)

Have I over complicated an easy and fun project? I hope not... but you can tell me to get bent if you want to anyway.
                            Any thoughts?
"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!' ('Bones' McCoy)
