  • Air Intake - Pros and Cons...

I've spent the last two days reading through threads on Intake Boots and Air Filters and I just can't seem to find an answer to my question.

Are there any obvious pros and cons with going with one or the other?

My bike's PO pulled off the air intake long before selling it to me. He gave me the part when I bought the bike but told me I probably wouldn't need it. I'm just curious as to how everyone else has theirs set up.

I pulled my breather box out and put in air pods. For me there was only one reason to do it: never have to wrestle with the air box again. After taking the box out to clean the carbs the first time I knew that I didn't want to have to do that again. I also had a feeling I would be back in the carbs again frequently. This turned out to be totally correct as I have been in the carbs a number of times. The pods just make my life easier.

Pod filters are the way to go. Easy to wash out, dry, spray with filter oil and put back on. Bike looks better, unless you want to go the restoration route.

I removed the airbox also and for the same reasons. I then used the stacks out of the old airbox and fitted foam filters on the ends. Looks good and can reach the idleset knob with no problems.

          Pod Filters

So where did you get the Pod Filters? Are those the metal ones?

I made some caps that would fit the ends of the stacks snug and then cut the centers out smaller then fitted foam filters inside the caps. Right now I`am using the outside of the stack to hold the cap and filter in place. I have not road tested yet so I don`t know if I will have to make any adjustments to this yet. Right now if everything works out it should do the trick.

                Replace Carb Airbox w/ Pods

If you have a 78-79 XS1100 with the carb vents going to the air box, you need to do more research on the website before replacing the air box that has carb float bowl vents.

I have stock airbox with... rather... skeletal... air "filter". Large debrees and mice cant get to the carbs, I don't worry bout other stuff since im not near sahara.

So have most people gone the route of Air Pods? I was looking at mine last night, and think I'm going to pull off the filters I have on there now and put a set of Pods on.

                    Thanks everyone for your input.

Both my XS's and SWMOB's XV have stock airbox with OEM style K&N filter element. One of my XS750's has pods (never ran since I got it) and the other has no carbs or airbox.

                        Steetrat,

My xj1100 has had pods and 4-1 exhaust, since I got it, it appears that the carbs have not been rejetted, but seems to run fine. Alittle lean on one cylinder, but seems to be straightening out since I have been into the carbs.

Ive heard stories here about the nightmare an airbox on an xj can be, and am glad (esp. with the amount of times Ive had the carbs off) that mine has pod filters.

Partsnmore.com or bikebandit.com for the pods. Went from 110's to 112.5's, 42.5's for pilots with free flowing 4/1, runs fine.

in my opinion bike looks better with stock airbox..it's certainly quieter...won't let in rain....i've had my airbox off several times (playing with jetting) it gets easier each time. the only reasons i see to run pods are ( 1) going racing (2)don't have original ( 3) lazy (4) no mechanical ability... my bike idles smooth and runs like a bat outa hell./. ithink i like this thing

5/ less **** to carry around, 6/ less reason to put off servicing the carbs, 7/ pods & rejetting makes them go better again.
