Wirring Speedo

My 79SF has recently developed a whinning/wirring noise from the speedometer. The guage still functions correctly, its just annoying. I figure its try, maybe... but then I read that there isn't much to lube inside the speedo itself (I'm quite positive the noise is coming from the speedometer itself).

Any thoughts?

It's probably the cable. Try lubing it or replacing it.

I was on a two hour drive last year when my speedo started making the same noise. Was a very loud squeeling noise.
Eventually the speedo locked up inside and the cable broke.
Had to find a used speedo at wrecker.
My advice would be to disconnect the cable now, so that you don't have to buy a new cable when it locks up on you.
Then find yourself a new/used guage.
You could try taking yours apart and lubing it, but from what I've seen, finding another one is alot less bother.

Speedo interchangebility

If you can't find a 160mph "XS1100SF" speedo your SF can use any Yammie Special speedo including the 140mph speedo from an XS750, the 120mph from an XS650 or the 85mph "EPA" speedo from any '80 and up Special of whatever size, even the 400.

Try disconnecting the cable, and use a tywrap to keep it close to in place. A quick ride should tell you if it's the cable or the speedo. No noise, get a speedo. Noise, replace the cable.
I would just get a complete cable if it's the problem. Once it starts making noise, the inner wall may take out a new inner cable.

You can attach the drive end of the cable in a reversable drill and run it in reverse to drive the cable, and speedo. You may be able to trouble shoot the problem that way. I was able to get the speedo to register 40 mph with a drill driving it.
