XJ11 90-degree parts?

As many of you know I transformed my XJ11 into a 3-wheeler. After about 4000 miles, I came to a grinding halt. I am able to run the bike in nuetral, and easily click it into 1st gear. But while easing out the clutch you can feel that it's bound-up somehow and the shaft won't rotate.

My guess (an uneducated one) is that I've bungled the 90-degree drive aperatus that lies after the gear box.

Jon, the centre bolt on one of my XS11's snapped clean in half once. It's the one on the left in the pic. Maybe that's what's happened? I fixed it by using a thinner washer and locktiting the nut back on as best I could. Ran it like that for a couple of years with no problems. Possibly the U-joint is shagged too?

when that center bolt broke, did the gears turn like crazy but with no movement? on mine, nothing past the engine is able to turn.

mid gear box

i'd lay money on the mid gear unit. My gave way driving down the road,nearly threw me over the handle bars at 30 mph.to check remove the bolts that hold the drive shaft to it,and push bike forward.if bike moves freely then try to turn the output of the mid gear while tranny in neutral.

yup, slowed down at an intersection, came to a stop, and never moved again. in neutral, the driveshaft won't turn.

any suggestions on a fix?

When that bolt snapped, the driveshaft slopped around and jammed hard in the swingarm and locked up the back wheel. Happened mid corner The engine, gearbox, and mid drive still rotated but no power to back wheel. Had to peel back the rubber boot and lever the shaft free. Could then push the bike along the road.

Hey John, and Pggg,

What's that old saying, when you hear hoofprints, don't go looking for Zebras! The most common malady is the burning up of the middle gear bearings, and hence the lockup. John, you need to do some diagnostics to ruleout the middle gear vs. the rear Final Drive. Then, you can get a replacement Middle Gear assembly for under $100....I know AndrewWeiss just posted in the Member's Forum that he has several available, a relatively simple bolt off and on swap! But you'll need to do maintainance on it re: changing the fluid and then monitoring it closely! Your trike design/mod may have put more stress on it than it normally gets with just the single rear wheel!?

Jon, any chance of seeing some pics of that trikes rear end? I've rigged up a chaindrive rear from Kawasaki sportbike parts. Just a bike not a trike. Am just waiting on a couple of parts before it all gets bolted on. Those pinion gears can't handle any wear or misalignment - one of the Europe guys drive unit crapped out because of previous bearing trouble. Chewed all the teeth up!
