  • signals don't work, neutral light on?

Can anyone guess why this is happening? What's broken? The bike is a 79 Special.

    Ed,

You'll need to supply a LOT more information, ie, other symptoms, circumstances when they occur, new or recently purchased, condition when bought, etc, before the members of this fourm can work their magic, diagnose, and solve your problem.

      Hey there Edgo,

Okay, IF this is a newly acquired bike, or even one you've had for a while, first thing to check is ALL wire connections, check and clean them all. Most electrical gremlins are solved by this!

The neutral light is controlled by a mechanism in the tranny, and when the shift drum is rotated to be in neutral, this device completes the ground circuit from the bulb/indicator light all the way to ground, and the light turns on. So...could be a faulty mechanism, but could also be a wire that has gotten rubbed raw and is grounding against the frame completing the circuit, and causing the light to come on!?

Turn signals not working, bad ground at bulbs/socket. Do both bulbs light on either side but don't blink? IF so, then flasher unit could be bad. Can be replaced with standard 2 prong flasher, but will loose self cancel feature! Again, clean wires and sockets and ground contacts first! ALso, could be low battery, or poor charging system. Okay, that should get you started!
      Poof, it's MAGIC!!!

Part of it could also be a simple as a dead fuse?? Like fxrer says - tell us a little story. With the number of people we've got hanging around here at the forum, chances are very good that somebody has already had and fixed the same problem(s) you're facing.

        BTW - welcome!

I agree with TCAT: Check ALL of the connections and fuses first. I "work with people who have computers". The first question I ask is, "Is it plugged in?"

Your neutral light wire is probably touching the frame somewhere. Look down on the left side under the frame and you'll see a connection with a Phillips screw in it. Unhook it and see if your light goes out while in gear. If not your wire is rubbing ground somewhere.

Signals is probably a fuse holder problem if all four won't light up.
