  • whats with the name ? XS11

Ive had over 60 bikes. I restore a couple a year.
    Mostly Honda's/
    In Yamaha's
    i had a 650 Special
850 Triple and just bought a low mileage XS1100.
Help me understand why the XS1100 is called the XS11 here.
is the 850 triple called the 8.5 ?

I have the same year (81) Goldwing too. I must say the shaft drive on the Yamaha is more Neanderthal than the Honda.

It's called that because when it was introduced it meant that it was capable of turning 11 second quarter miles. Ans as we get older it's easier to just type xs11 instead of the whole thing. Those extra two keystrokes can add up over time.

      11 second quarter mile - - -

I will have to dig out my old cycle mags.
I had no idea this old thing was that fast.

thanks for the fast reply. I think I will see if I can post a picture of my beast.

Hey, Steve, read the side cover. It says XS ELEVEN. How's that for a reason?

          eleven

If ya'll used ELEVEN and not 11 I would get it.

But I might buy that story before thinking my XS can do the quarter in 11 seconds.

If you don't like the answer then don't ask the question.
Research a little and you will find the the XS 1100 (says XS Eleven on the side cover) was the fastest production motorcycle in 1978 (it's introduction) and was the first stock bike to run in the 11's.
Also being 1100cc (or 1.1 liter).
            Catchy marketing name.

              relax

Dont get all excited. (unless you like getting excited)

I used the word "MY" xs1100.

If I could do the quarter in 15 seconds with MY bike I would be amazed.

Sorry, wasn't getting excited. I get asked questions all day at work then they don't like the answer and argue with me. So I say that alot. "If you don't like the answer then don't ask the question" .
I'm sure that Yamaha got the best, lightest rider (PeeWee Gleason?) to ride a "factory tuned stock production" XS11(00) to get the 11.99 ET.
I think some on the list have gotten their bikes into the 13-12 second range.

                    I learned something

                    This is all about learing.

I did not know the 1100 yamaha was 1101 cc !

I can only think of one other bike that was as large or larger displacement then the badge.

I wont get this exactly right, but think it was Kawasaki
that had a 600 class bike but it was really about 630cc
of course that way they had the fastest 600.

                    End the Post ?
RIDING Honda's too long ? there is no such thing.

                      Hey Daniel,

How about a real challenge, other than the model of the bike you ride, 80XSELEVENG spelled backwards!

I have found that 1100 isn't actually the size of the engine...that's how many parts are in it.

                          Hello Steve,
                          Hey all in fun okay?
Check out the trivia quiz on the left of the page, and if you want to learn more you can go to Yamaha-motors.com its Yamaha's 50th anniversary this year and each month they post more info about the history of yamahas. be prepared to wait a bit on the graphics if you dont have alot of memory on your computer.

In 1977 yamaha introduced the XS1000 that was going to be released in 1978. It was actually an XS1100 and that is why it blew away all the other bikes in the 1000cc class.
