  • Brake light bulb

On my last ride my brake light stuck to the on position. I'm thinking it's the bulb, even though it does not look burtout. (the base does seem to be burnt) However, I'm having a heck of a time finding one. The local canadian tire didn't seem to have any and my local yamaha dealership needs to order it.

I'm having a hard time thinking that this is some special type of bulb. Any suggestion regarding what I could do?

If the light stuck on, it's NOT the bulb. You have a brake light switch sticking. It is probably the rear light switch, as it's usually in the gunk and mud.
I would turn on the ignition, and try to disconnect the rear brake light switch. Just unplug one of the wires, and see if the light goes out. If not, then look to the front switch. The two wires from it connect in the headlight housing. I would also check for a wire that is shorting on the headlight housing.

      BRAKE LIGHT

IF THE BULB WAS ON ALL THE TIME ONE OF YOUR BRAKE LIGHT SWITCHS IS STUCK ON. CHECK THEM FIRST. ALSO IF IS A BRAKE/TAIL LIGHT ANY 1157 OR 2357 BULB WILL WORK. IF IT IS BRAKE LIGHT ONLY THEN USE 1057 FROM ANY AUTO PARTS STORE

        tail light

Okay I removed and cleaned the rear switch. Good newis that I got the break light to go off. However, now I cannot get it to go back on when I press either the front or back brake.

        any suggestions?

          Hey Teck,

First, please edit your profile so we know what model/year your bike is!?

Secondly, recheck the bulb, after being left on for so long, the filament may have gotten fried, and after turning off, etc., may have finally blown?

Next, your front switch may have been bad for a while and you didn't know it? Take a jumper wire and pull the plug from the switches, and use the wire to jump/connect the two wires in the plug and see if the brake light comes on. If so, then possibly the switches have gotten fried and need replacing?

Don't forget to check fuses? T.C.

              Tail light issue

              Hello all

This is getting frustrating. Pulled and cleaned both switches and tested to see if a power was passing. Both passed. However, the tail light remains on, but the brake light will not come on. I put one switch on at a time and still nothing. check all fuses all are good. new bulb. tried with the bike running and off.

              Help!

                Stupid question time

Do you have the bulb in backwards? It can be done, and by doing that, the dimmer filiment of the bulb won't be seen over the brighter one that should be for the brake light. Have you unplugged the wiring at the tail light assy and tested for power there?

On either switch, assuming you have a 78-79, there is a brown wire and a green/white wire. Jumper the green/white to 12volts and the bulb should turn on. If not there is break in wire some where between the switch and bulb.

If that works, jumper from the brown to green/white. If the bulb turns on then the switch is bad. If it dosn't, there is a bad connection in the brown wire.

The brown wire supplies 12v to the switch, and when the switch closes the green/white connects the 12v to the bulb which is grounded at the tail light assembly.

                    Teck,

Pull your seat. There's a multi-pin connector under there near the TCI. IIRC, 9 pins. It feeds the entire tail assembly. Clean it.
