No 1 and 4 being too tight would explain the 'popping' I get at idle out the left side. I have the Jardine 'spagetti pipes' and 1 & 4 run to the left side. Also, the engine dosen't drop to idle as fast as it should (little 'engine braking').
    78 specs are Int .16mm - .20mm and Exh .21mm - .24mm.
Guess I'll be using the valve tool that was in the bucket of stuff that came with the bike. Yamaha original tool, not the Motion Pro.

This is the 1st project in my new shop . 12' x 17' that I've insulated with 3/4" foam insulation. Roll-up door on one end, sliding door on the other end. Over the insulation will be peg-board so I can hang stuff all over the place.

OK. After searching all day and finally finding my cam follower holder.
I have it holding down the bucket but how do you get the shim out? I've tried (like the manual said) a small screwdriver to lift it and remove with needle-nosed pliers or a magnet.
I'm wondering if the tool is also holding the shim? There's not enough room to see if it is.
I'm about to turn the bike over and shake it out.

Pat, are you trying the screwdriver in the slot in the cam follower? You won't get it out unless you do. The oil makes an extremely tight seal between the shim and the follower so you have to pry on the bottom,

          hi pat

          taking for granted:
shim tool holding bucket down about 1/4 inch below cam after cam rotated
notch in bucket centered and pointing at other cam

I had to fight to get several shims out. 5 came out relatively easy.
Also had to modify the shim tool from motion pro

With persistance I got the shims out.
            #1 has a 260 and #4 has a 265. I put the 260 into #4 hoping it would measure ok, it's still too tight.
Tomorrow I'll head to the local dealer(s) to see if they'll swap shims. I'll be looking for 250 & 255.
