info on 'safe starting' features needed

I need some help finding out which models/years have/don't have the following:
    • sidestand switch
    • clutch switch
    • neutral switch
These work with each other to prevent the bike from starting if it is an 'unsafe' condition.

Neutral switch - if bike is in neutral, it will start with clutch not pulled in and/or sidestand down.

If the bike is NOT in neutral, then both the clutch must be pulled in and the sidestand up.

The XJ has all three of these - I'd like to know which ones other models have. TIA

But my SG will lurch forward in gear with the clutch engaged, sidestand down. Don't tell me there's something funny about Crunchbird ?!

My clutch cable snapped in town, so I got into first gear, and had to stop for one red light. Started up in gear and when she caught I was Ridin'.

I don't think that's right about XSs. I don't believe that any model came stock with a Neutral, sidestand or clutch interlock switch.

I know my 78E has a neutral switch.. but I hell if I know where it is... any photos/description on where it is... the switch and cable should be located under the engine... I guess... any additional info welcome.

Call me stupid, but I REALLY CANNOT FIND THE F*CKING SWITCH!

no side or center stand switches... nor clutch switch...

Come to think of it, how DOES that neutral light know when to come on??

The 81H and 81SH fiche shows a clutch switch too!!

                80 Midnight Special,

Neutral light switch, but no side-stand interlock or clutch switch.

I think the XJ were the only ones with a side stand switch, and clutch interlock switch. My 80 has none of this hooey.....

The XJ sidestand switch is indeed a 10M part #. H and SH have the neutral and clutch switch. (I'm guessing LH does too.)

Okay you E and F owners, you have a neutral light? Can you start your bike when it is in gear?

Hooey is right, the lawyers got ahold of the XJ team alright! Talk about overkill.

Are you saying/asking a neutral light switch or a neutral interlock switch - IOW if you're not in neutral you can't start the bike?

I don't believe any XS11 has a neutral interlock switch that would prevent you from starting the bike in gear.

                        I am asking. However....

The LH manual shows it indeed has both a neutral and clutch interlock, so there is some evidence that at least ONE model of XS does have the interlock.

The H/SH manual also has the same setup (called the Starter Circuit Cut-off system). Okay, I'm satisfied that all the 81's had both neutral and clutch interlocks.

I'd really like to know whether that was the first year for any interlock system.

Well, the 80 Midnight only has a neutral light switch, there is no interlock and it will start in gear (with the sidestand down and no clutch if you so desire)

On my 79F I DO have a neutral light (and switch), but it doesn't have any impact on starting the bike. I can start in gear with the clutch pulled, in neutral without the clutch pulled, side stand up or down. FWIW

And its a real thrill when you forget to put it into neutral when starting in the garage.
