For $300 I picked up an '81 Special AND a '79 XS750 for a parts bike. $2500 and I was at the Tahoe ride with a few people from here.

Now I'm hoping the dealer will give me $1000 for it

$600 for Frank, custom paint job included. Not a bad deal for $2000 or so in paint.

81SH $320 Carbs came in 4 plastic bags disassembled. Brakes dragging, front end tweaked, been sitting outside under a cover for about a year. 6 months worth of learning from here and it was road worthy and looking good. TKAT fork brace and new E3's and she runs great. Priceless!

79 standard been sitting in a barn next to a salt water swamp, $50. Corrosion so bad it was hopeless. Salvaged some parts and gave it the proper funeral

                    All 3

I bought the '79F from my neighbor who was moving for $450, but $100 of that was a park flyer RC plane. $300 for Jardine slip-ons, 1st and 2nd gear fix, and sold for $1000, but I have it back now and it's for sale. It has fairing, bags and box that I think is stock, mechanically perfect, just needs polish and paint.

Got the 78E from Texas. Lovingly restored by Dave Delzell and came with a trailer load of parts. I did the tranny fix and some other minor fixes and it cost me $2000. Probably a little high, but under the circumstances, it was the right thing to do.

Last year I bought a '79 SF for parts for $400 as it was a running bike. Kept the engine, front wheel, clutch cable, carbs and mirrors then sold the rest which contained a nice stock exhaust for $250.

First XS cost me about $300.00
Ran like crap until I found this site and got a manual
Set of carb kits and it was good to go. Was my daily ride until I got the Mirriam.
                      Next 5 XSes $50.00 to $300.00
Last two XSes (the Mirriam and another SF) cost a little more . Took the PO a couple months to break down my resistance and make me a deal I could not refuse....

$200 for mine. It had been sitting in a storage shed for about 14 years and was parked with gas in it.

Between carbs, tires, brakes, fluids, SS brake lines, handle bars, spedo, 750 final drive, I probably have about another $1000 into it.

If it weren't for this site it probably would still be sitting in my garage.

                          Ash

Ash cost me $575. PO painted the tank and side covers, put new tires, rebuild forks, progressive shocks, recovered the seat, new head gasket, and then laid her down. Let her sit for a year. A carb clean, new gas, and charged battery was all she needed. Then I rebuilt the carbs, cleaned EVERYTHING, changed the valve cover gasket, etc....about $175 in parts.

Parts bike that I took side covers, headlight, and random parts...$150. And it still runs.

I got my first 2 off eBay for $285 for the pair. One was an 80 special with 22k miles on it and very clean. The special riding position kills my back so I fixed it up and sold that one for $1200. The other one in the pair was a rat with 17k miles on it that sat outside under a carport for 20+ years. I still have this one but it's likely I'll part it out.

#3 was a full dresser I got for $300 that desperately needed a carb job and fork seals. I gave the fairing to Prom and sold the bags and used parts from #4 to convert it back to naked configuration then like an idiot sold it for a grand.

#4 was an 80 standard parts bike I paid $235 for and promptly stripped and sold what I didn't need. I still have a box or 2 of junk from this one.

#5 was a parts bike I bought from RockJock that I paid so little for that I won't mention it here. I did drive from Portland, OR to Bozeman, MT to get it. I won't be doing anything like that again...

#6 was a free trade in when I sold #4 and I used some of it's parts to fix #1 for sale. Then I rebuilt it with bits from #5 and it became the Mongrel that I rode for 3 years.

#7 I bought back #3 for $200 after the guy I sold it to rode it hard and left it outside for 3 years. Another $200 and S'load of work it's ready to ride again. It smokes a bit when cold and will probably get the engine from # 2 or #4 later on.

I have a brand X 1100 that I will also be fixing up to ride so my XS11 will be my sportier bike and the the GW will be my touring bike. I don't think I will be buying any more XS11s.

In case you were still wondering, yes, I'm cheap.

I just traded a Winchester Model 92 for my XJ. It was the same rifle the Rifleman (Chuck Connors) used and was in most of John Wayne's movies too. Belonged to my Grandpa and I never used it. Worth about a grand.
