mine was a "trade in"- guy brought me his special and said "fix this and you can have my other one" I was thinking the other one must be REALLY rough, so went and looked and it was in GREAT shape! Cleaned the carbs on his, went and jumpstarted mine and drove it home! I figure i had about $150 bucks in labour into his bike......

I paid $60 for my E. It had the 1979 sticker on the plate and 7,200 miles on the odo. This was in 1992. The bike had sat (mostly outside) for 20 years unused.
$400 total got it on the road.
This last Dec I bought my LG for $500 with 45,000 miles. Bone-stock original and all it's 'needed' was tires and a new seat cover.
I think both bikes were steals.Pat Kelly

I got mine for free. I brought the guy a 12-pack and left with an 81XS1100 in running condition that just needed a float adjustment. The price came yesterday when I took it to get it registered. I gave Nazi-fornia $287 to get it legal.

MY FIRST ONE I BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN 1978
but all last summer i saw a full dressed 11 in a guys backyard
i went by there once a week, it never moved
well last fall he moved it near the road, no sign just sitting there
i figured he would want too much for it
but
after a few weeks i stopped in and went up to the house and asked , what he was doing with it, as he didn't have a sign on it,
he looked at me and said that he was giving it away, so i said " can i have it"
he said sure take it away, i was back there in a half an hour with a friend and a trailer.
motor was seized, but 79 standard with factory fairing w/lowers
vetter detachable bags and trunk.
and 2 new tires, the nubs weren't even worn off yet
whoo wee
then as i was loading it
the guys comes out and thanks me for hauling it away for him.http://home.securespeed.us/~xswilly/

$900 for an 81 Special with 8000 mi. on it in 1988. It was perfect, always indoors, shiney gold emblems, too! Owner was stuck, moving to CA, had to sell it and a Corvette!
I wound up putting 50K more miles on her before selling in '96. That bike has a lot of good memories attached to it. First date with my (now) wife was on it, later our daughter Cristina celebrated her first birthday in the sidecar with us at Americade in '94. She won youngest rider that year!
That trip was also the first (and last) time I test rode a Harley. OOps!, that's another thread!

Best Deal on XS11
I bought a 79 XS11F Std with 40K mi for $300. It needed Carb and Brake complete rebuild. It had been outside for a long time. Two years went by and SHMBO complained about Registration ($50) and Insurance ($35) so I started to fix things. Carbs, Petcocks, brake calipers, Master Cylinders, etc. Fork Braces!
Put Tuck & Rool seat, helmet lock, and Gold Wheels w/ drilled disks on, from a 79 Midnight? Still have to fix gas gauge and turn signal self cancelling. I can use speddo and tach from Midnight.
I keep adjusting and it Runs good now. I get 40 MPG on a freeway commute of 60 mi round trip.
This 79 XS11 will spell my old 80 XS1100G Std (81K mi) I bought new. I also use a 83 XV920 Virago (60K mi) bought new, for my commute. Sometimes two bikes will be down for work, but the third comes to the rescue. All bikes get 40 MPG on my commute.
Why buy something new for a daily commute?Ernie Elmore

75 bucks, no carbs, no air box, pin - holed, rusted "special" tank, bad tires, no battery, no second gear, bad clutch, bad clutch cable bad throttle cable. 600 bucks later it was on the road...for about 300 miles, then busted a shift fork. went to fix that and things got worse, all the gears were in need of serious attention or replacement, spun main bearing, buggered up cases (from the spun bearing...but oddly enough, the crank was ok). 1800 bucks later, I've been riding it for 2 years and I gotta say it's all good(still looks like crap, but runs quite well). I guess it was a good deal because I'm happy with it, now if I can ever get around o getting it ready to ride for the season. have a nice day and ride safeI am the Lorax, I speak for the Trees
