Have you checked the battery? Make sure the cables aren't corroded and the battery is fully charged first.

      Hey FloridaJoe,

I editted your thread subject, from STATOR to STARTER trouble!! Could be many things, like Maximan said, clean all connections, pull wires off battery, starter solenoid, etc.. You can also bypass the starter switch, if it cranks strong, then you know it's not the starter, but could be the switch/solenoid!?

Or it could even be that pesky little starter button making marginal contact.

Now, just for something to do, you should carefully open up the old one, clean it up inside, give it a wee squirt of electrical contact cleaner, and put it back together for a spare. You'll have a spare, and also the experience to be able do it again on the side of the road if the need should arise. Pull this off on someone else's ride and you'll really be a hero!

              Joe,

Nice to know there is another XS'r near me. I am just west of you. Jazzrat is another local up in Delray Beach. If you need help, let me know and I will see what I can do for you. I am no great wrench but I have been getting by.

Which bike salvage yard are you referring too in your post?
