  • Kong vs. Zilla

No this is not a thread reviewing a cheesy Japanese horror film.

Now that I've got Kong ('80 Special) running good I've had a chance to do some direct comparisons between it and Zilla ('82 Maxim). Both of these bikes are bone stock...I think...I know Zilla is and it appears Kong is too unless the guy before me did mods I'm not aware of. Nothing obvious though.

    POWER
Kong has significant (read noticable) kick over Zilla...especially in the upper mid range. They both come out of the hole about same but once they hit 4-5000 rpm, Kong pulls much harder out to redline. Zilla feels flat and a little sluggish. Also the Maxim starts missing very slightly as it approaches redline. ??? Starving for fuel maybe?

I hear that Yammy designed the Maxim to get better mpg than it's predecessors...but the XS was a bit more powerful. I think Zilla runs a little lean. Probably a re-jetting and a CDI that advances the timing back to where the XS is would make a big difference. But as it stands Kong will thump Zilla on acceleration and pulling.

    HANDLING
Again...AFAIK...these are both stock bikes, except that Kong has a Mustang seat. Still handling is where Zilla rules. He is much more stable than Kong. Kong feels "shaky" at times. Zilla feels like its on rails in the curves. Kong makes me skiddish in the twisties. I'm sure this has to do with the fact that the Maxim had a factory fork brace built into the front fender. Also the position of the rider on the XJ is quite a bit lower than on the XS and the handle bars are much improved on the big Maxim as well. Bob Jones also indicated Yamaha stiffened the frame on the Maxim.

    RIDE QUALITY/COMFORT
Again...from my experience...Zilla has it hands down. Kong rides rougher. Even though I have the same air in the front forks. I'm sure new tires on Kong will improve the ride immensely. Also the Maxim has rear air shocks. They seem to ride smoother. But regardless the cause...the Maxim simply rides better.

There is more leg room on the Maxim. It's very obvious when you're riding the twain. When I looked closely the Maxim seat gives the driver 3-4 extra inches! Since both bikes have the same frame (dimensionally) I measured the distance from the triple tree bolt to the the back of the driver seat. On Zilla it is 39 inches but only 36 on Kong. Along the same lines...the horizontal distance from the foot pegs to the back of the driver seat is 17 on Zilla...14 on Kong. And boy does that 3 inches make a huge difference in leg room and resulting comfort.

The seat on the Maxim is longer but only by a couple inches. The big difference is where they positioned the seat on the XJ versus the XS. On the XJ it's back farther on the rear fender. Add to that the extra seat length and wah-lah...you have 3 extra inches.

    SUMMARY
Kong is more powerful....Zilla is more comfortable. I think with suspension mod Kong will be much improved but It will never have that low seat like Zilla. On the other hand with a little tweaking (jetting/timing advance via performance CDI) I think Zilla would stay right with Kong. Either way they are both wonderful machines. I only wish I could figure a way ride both simultaneously (Russian style ) so I could take both to TeXSive next month.

      Cody;
The Tkat fork brace should be the FIRST thing on Kong. It will make a "night and day" difference in handling. You may even find putting one on Zilla helps.

        Ray

I have e-mailed TKAT so many times in the last 2 - 3 weeks I burned up my hard drive!

Seriously...I can't get the guy to answer my e-mails.

Tkat@tkat.com is where I'm e-mailing the guy. Maybe he doesn't like Okies. I've about given up. I am now trying to get my hands on a Telefix.

If not I guess I'll take the dimensions to a local machine shop and have 'em custom build one. The estimate so far is about $300 but I really don't have anyother choice if I wanna get KONG handling better.

        Thanks

          Handling

Study up on the aerodynamic effects of that plastic obscenity disfiguring the front of a good bike. Not a snowballs chance in hell of getting good handling while you have that ugly windsock on your bike.

            Huh????

Try again dude. I've owned and driven several XSes....some with fairings....somewithout. I can promise you there is little difference because of the fairing as far as highway handling goes.

If it were not true then neither bike...Zilla nor Kong would handle worth a flip. However...Zilla handles very well. Kong does not.

No doubt it has little to do with the fairing since both are "faired". It obviously has to do with springs....braces and such.

            Thanks anyway.

I'll drive over to Tkat's shop at lunch, and have him give you an e-mail! I need an excuse to ride, and it's a great day for it.

I have the Pacifico disfiguring plastic windsock with lowers on the front of my E and I rode about 50 miles with no hands at 85 MPH up I-5 on my way to Big Is. Deuce. Changed lanes to pass slower vehicles (got some strange looks) and there was a cross-wind (slight).
Yes the fairing is large, a godsend in winter (rain, cold). I'm sure it cuts my milage a bit but I don't think it's ugly (eye of the beholder and all that). And I do like the Martini fairing too.

Hehehehe! Ain't it the truth. Zilla is just as stable. When I rode out to Big Bend this fall.....mile after mile I would cruise with ..."Look Ma!! NO HANDS!!"...that is literally how stable it was...in spite of the hideous...destabilizing... Vetter.

Actually the fairing on Kong is much better looking IMHO.

When I first bought Kong from the lady in Tracy, CA...I knew the first thing I was gonna do is take that butt ugly windsock OFF!. But then I drove it... WOW....WOW WOW WOW...After about 30 miles on the highway I repented of my sin. I swore to the bike gods I would NOT remove the fairing from Zilla...but instead I would use Zilla as my "road bike". The JEHU is now my street fighter...and fight he DO...

                      Are you really bikers?

If you want to be that comfortable while travelling, buy a car.

Hey Screwball!...go start a flame war elsewhere PLEASE!

I've had numerous bike. Most naked...some not. Both types are fun. I really have no idea why you would give a rats rear what I ride. I certainly haven't belittled you because you prefer a naked bike...have I?

So please take your gas can and box of matches somewhere else.....................mate..................... ..

Last time I checked, free speech was still in existence. As far as I am concerned, I am just as much entitled to voice or type my opinion as you or anybody else. If you do not have a sense of humour, that is not my problem. If you do not think that anyone else has the right to express their opinion, that is not my problem.

                              Temper, Temper ! !

                              Hey Cueball and Maximan,

I, too, do not like the large frame mounted fairings, I like my bike to be nimble, but I also don't ride it in inclimate weather.

Yes....you both are entitled to your opinions, but I would like to mention that this FORUM is more for TECHNICAL discussions; how do you fix this, where can I find that, NOT so much for opinions, and FLAME wars will NOT BE TOLERATED! ! !

Remember Cueball, we're "soft" Americans here, not that hardy down under stock.....but we still consider ourselves bikers, just not necessarily Mad Max!! Stay Cool
