See, I am new at this...

Correctamundo! I didn't mean lean, I meant rich... pu... and it's been that way since I got it 3 years ago. I'll hafta play with the image/server deal, all that's new to me too... so much to learn, so little time.

Brock, it begs the question, "which one won the race?"

That poor little guy. I found him in the middle of the road on some back highway in the middle of Georgia somewhere. i pulled over and brought him over to the field, and he wouldnt even come out to have his picture taken.

i thought about bringing him with me, but i didnt want to subject him to the shock on another bumpy hour or two in the dark in my trunk. imagine the mess you'd make.

I pulled over at the same spot on my way back, and no sight of him, so i guess he made it out to whereever he was heading.

OK. I've got my air box off, and am thinking about putting my new cone shaped filters on.

question: what about all those 3 hoses that are attached to the front of the air box? one goes down to the engine, and two to the carbs.

what am i do do with those after I've gotten rid of the air box?

The larger hose is a crankcase breather. The two smaller hoses from the carbs are float bowl vents. All 3 need to vent 'to atmosphere' so you don't want to plug them. You could just tie them up somewhere up under the tank. You would be better off finding some small filters for the ends of each hose that would still let them breathe, but that would keep bugs and dirt out.

The big hose is the engine breather hose, you may want to put a small filter on it like a uni filter. They either push on or clamp on. The 2 small hoses are carb vent hoses.Fix them so that they run up first then drop down below the carb float bowels. That is basically all you need to do to them. Hope this helps.

                Hey Russ,
You say the EMGO are cheap, what about TACO brand? If both are cheap, what brand is a good brand to get? Thanks!

I'm not sure I I had a set on my XS650 when I got it. On the 650 they case a disterbance in the airflow going into he carb. You don't notice it at lower rpm's but when you get up around 5500 rpm the motor starts breaking up and the RPM's top out just below 6k. Some guys fix it by puting extensions in between the filter and the carbs allows the air to settle back down. K=N's don't do it but htere about 60-70Bucks verses 10 or less for the EMGO's. I guess you get what you pay for. I just went back to the factory airbox and stock filters because I had the box. I've never done it on the XS1100 and have never see much written about it so it probably doesn't matter. If I were you and was=nted to make the change I'd try to look at both pods and see if I could detect a difference in quality. Then take the time to make sure a got it jetted right. It's not really hard but it can take a couple of shots the are some good tech tips that explain it. Again it's not hard but can be time consuming. Good Luck with it if you make the change.

BTW, the '80 - '81 XS and '82 XJ has 54mm inlet bell, takes a different individual filter than the ealier XS. From Cycle - re- Cycle catalog for Pod filters, the 54 mm (2 1/8 inch) filters fit the following bikes:
