  • Oil Change

    Dear Friends,

Thanks for the feedback! I will do the oil change myself.

Any recommdations on the best filter? Oil? Mobile 1? Synthetic? Or Casterol?

    Kind Regards,

No synthetics, they may cause the clutch to slip.

    Use castrol oil

    and Fram filters

I like the Fram filter but I can no longer find it anywhere locally. I asked at Kragen if they could order me a case and they told me that the # was dropped from their system by Fram. Same for AutoZone.
I'm now using STP filters but I like the Fram better.
The O ring for the housing bolt it too thin with the STP.
I use Castrol oil. 10/40 in winter and 20/50 in summer. Temp range here is low 30's in winter to 110 or more in summer.

Interesting that the Fram filter shows "available" at a local Kragen but the closest one (and AutoZone) told me the # had been dropped. I've known these guys for 18 years and they lied to me. I'm gonna go have a talk with them.

Yeah, my local Schucks stopped stocking the Fram CH6002's, but I had them order 4 from the warehouse and got them that afternoon.

NAPA and CARQUEST have the filter. I found the part number here with a search. Both of these parts houses sell filters made by WIX. I don't know about this filter.

Dennis Kirk also had them last time I needed one (don't need anymore since I am now using TC's adapter plate)

Until I changed to the TC mod, I used NAPA and Carquest drop-in filters, generally $2.95 - $3.95 USD. I'm a little anal about oil, I change it every 1,500-1,700 miles, name brand Havoline or Castrol 20-50.

If you can't cross reference an XS11 oil filter, the 83-93 Venture takes the exact same filter - in fact the oil filter housing and bolt are also exactly the same as the XS11.

                      Wix 24933

                      or

                      NAPA Gold 4933

Both are Wix filters and very high quality.

Concerning oil, you can use any quality motor oil. Take note that many motor oils (natural) have friction modifiers that make them behave much like synthetics. There is a big controversy as to whether these FMs may cause clutch slippage resulting in premature clutch failure.

Motorcycle manufacturers argue that (for instance ) Yamalube has no friction modifiers that cause these problems.

My understanding is any motor oil that does NOT say "Energy conserving" on the little round API certification emblem on the back of the quart has no friction modifiers added.

I assume that is correct. It is fairly easy to find 10-30 weights that meet his criteria. And ALL 20-50 oils I found meet this criteria. But for winter riding I prefer 5w-30. If I run anything heavier the oil light on Zilla flickers....even after the engine gets warm.

The only light oil I've found that has no friction modifiers is Valvoline MaxLife 5w-30.

I have just bought eight Wix oil filters on eBay. Here's the link.

                        http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

                        Did the link work?

Will these work on my 1978 XS1100E?

They look right but I just thought I'd ask here.

I just looked up and saw Maximan's post. I should look up more often.

Sorry for being annoying but I donated five bucks to the site so I feel I've got my money's worth!

The link works fine & so will the filters. But it sounds like an awfull lot of money. I paid $18.00 including freight for 8 of them on ebay.
There's always a way, figure it out.

                              Hey Pathfinder,

                              Try getting them in Australia!

and besides, $65 Australian is about 10c US
