  • XJ speedometer ?

My buddy has been slowly replacing parts on his '85 Maxim 700 XJ, damaged in a gravel wipeout this fall. He has most everything but a speedometer, which was pretty well crunched. All the OEM Yamaha sources show the speedo is no longer available. Can't get the bike inspected (here in PA) without a working speedometer.

Anyone know of a source for new, used, or repaired speedometers? (These are the white face type)

    Thanks

    Bicycle speedo

A lot of guys here use a Byclce speedo never seen them in Canada but They have a magnetic pick up that goes to the front wheel and measures reveloutions. Theyare even more accurate than the stock one so they say. Might be a cheaper better alternative. Mabye someone with knowledge on which i speak will give u more advice. ....MITCH

      Bicycle Speedo

I use one and have seen several other bikes with them. I bought mine from the local bike shop here in Sooke. They had several models in stock. Cost was about $40.00cdn. Easy enough installation and appears to be quite accurate. I installed it on my Honda Ascot which had a dud speedo. Only problem that I can report is that because it has LCG display, you cannot read it while wearing polaroid sunglasses.
Google "www.vetta.com" and check out their web site. It will cover all current models and the features.

Hey guys, thanks for the tip. I checked out that web site. Even though it won't match his tach, it's at least a way for him to get the bike back on the road. I'll keep looking for one on E-Bay, but at least he has another option.

Thanks to all the knowledgeable members, this forum is the best!

            Marty,

That's a great link! - I had MikesXS bookmarked but never thought to look for gauges there. A couple speedos look suitable, although small. I wonder if they use a cable, or electronic input?

            Thanks for the tip

              Other sources

              Hey there Fxrer,

JCW also has generic mechanical ones at this location:

              Parts-n-more has similar gauges here:

I expect the speedos listed at the Mike's XS site are cable operated. The late model XS650 has the same speedometer as the XS1100 Special. The XS650 also has a cable operated tachometer, so I expect that is what Mike is selling.

The 650's will work, I put a used one on my 81 Special due to mine breaking the odometer at 950miles!!! It only goes to 120, but that's 35 more than my stock 85, and still faster than I've ever tried to get it to go!!!
