  • Tranny problems Poll.

    Let me try this again,

New poll about tranny problems and whether they seem to be model specific. My Special developed the 1st and then 2nd gear malady after 8 years riding, est. 50k miles(odometer broke )
Not really a lot of hard riding, but the occas. power shift into 2nd, and putting into neutral at stops, and Clunking into first!!

The other 2 bikes I worked on were XJ's, guess they count as Specials!?

My 81 SPECIAL came to me with a unidentified transmission problem. Primarily was first gear. 35k on the clock
My 80 Special has no problems but then it is nearly brand new...now 8900 on the clock. My 78 has no problems and has 45 on the clock.

My '81 Special only had 27K on it two and a half years ago when I bought it and had no trans problems but it will slip or skip when under hard accelerattion now with 42K on it. I plan to fix it over the winter and replace the clutch disks and springs at the same time.

              What about the XJ's?

One of the XJ's that I had bought to restore had problems. You couldn't even get it to go into first, and it would jump out of second. I know the PO had beat on the bike pretty hard. His brother was the person I was dealing with, and he told me that he used to do a lot of burnouts, and the rear tire was bald as a baby's ass. It only had 13k miles on it.

my newly acquired 79 special had 1st gear problems.

but i honestly think that the reason for the problems - was a bad clutch.

it would not completely disengage, and i can just picture the P.O. griding it into first gear everytime he started up.

I havn't had any problems with the trany on MIYAMI XSept a little tough going into 2nd or 3rd gear when gettin on it full throttle. Ya really gotta " bang " it into gear or you'll go in between gears. Not good when pushin her that hard.

                    Hey Skids,

I set it for Multiple choice, so multiple owners could cast votes for different machines. I should have stated that in the question. But if you have more than 1 of the same type, then I guess you can't vote again!?
                    T.C.

PS, I added the comment about it being Multiple Choices, and also the XJ's, and added a few votes for the XJ's, the two that I worked on(DEO is one), and John W in Tx!

This is the 2nd '79 STD Touring I've owned and while neither has had any transmision problems. I have noticed one small quirk, neither bike likes to be tow taped lightly between gears. Both require firm deliberate shifts to prevent hitting faulse netrals between gears, especially the shift between 3rd and 4th gear. Once in each gear though, I've never exerianced any problems with them jumping out of gear.

It really surprized me that they still chose to use straight-cut gears in these. Most bikes got away from this to quiet down the gear noise on the highway.

I have also learned that shifting must be very deliberate on this machine. All indications are that it is normal. I have had the bike pop out of first once or twice, but I think it may have been because I didn't fully engage it.

                          Sorry to be awkward TapCat...

...but have XS1.1 Sport.... have had 5th gear problems.

Worked on 1st / 2nd gear dogs at the same time "just in case"...but no physical problems from these gears...

So...where do you want my vote...

                            Hey TopCat
Thanks for adding the XJ, my vote is in.

2nd gear fix will be my winter project. Much more confidence in tackling this project knowing all you guys are available to lean on for advice if I get stuck.

                              xs tranny

Have an xs11 special '79. Will occasionally slip out of first when I am getting underway. First couple of times it dumped me on me arse with severe damage to my ego. Otherwise it has been trouble free. I have since learned to keep my foot on the shift lever untill I'm underway.
The XS11 is the best damn standard bike ever made!!!

My recently re-built, hopped up '79 Special caught fire and burned everything from the top of the engine up: gas tank, wiring, seat, & melted my windshield all over the front of the bike. Just bought a 1980 Special that has been non oped for 9 years. My Skoot will rise from the ashes and be re named "The Phoenix!"
                              I've been riding since 1959.
