Dhost, Be careful with the "black chrome". I had a 83 Suzuki GS1100E that had some scratches on the black chromed exhaust by the pasenger footpegs.....made the mistake of trying to polish them out using Semichrome. It removed the scratches and the black coating in the chrome and left shiney chrome spots showing. This didn't look good!!!!

Definitely like having my ole 78E looking fresh. I use a variety of products like Semi-Chrome, X-Treem Metal Polish and have found some excellent information and polishing tools and pads from www.eastwood.com

On Dhost's behalf. I bought his bike a few years ago, and semi-restored it. I had the pipes ceramic coated black by Jet Hot. Replated the gold chrome and powder coated 20 sum parts including the handlebars. Sargent did the seat with a nice gold trim to match. Tried to do Dhost prowd. One of these days I'd like to get it back and repaint the engine.

Thank you sir. On the subject of polishing, I just noticed the bench grinder in the backround with buffing wheels on it. Thats the homely little tool I use for polishing.

The best way i've found to keep your polished parts looking good is to use 0000 steel wool. It works great! It doesn't take long to wipe down your parts.

I buy my polishing supplies from tarheel. They have a shaft with gearings and pulley and left hand threads on one side. I bought mine several years ago and it is still going strong.




I built this piece for around 20 bucks. I had the motor.



It is a nasty job but the end product is well worth it. Roy

Thanks. A friend of mine brought out a part he had polished by hand and it looked decent. I pulled a old dull engine cover off the shelf and polished a spot down the middle of the part and he couldn't believe it took so short of time.
I gave him a cutting wheel and a polishing wheel and he went home and built him a buffer and polished everything in his shop.

Polishing is not so bad if you have a good set up. It is a nasty job and you need to wear a dust mask. A face shield is not a bad idea either. Roy

I've always heard Not to use steel wool on aluminum? That it will shine up nicely but also embed tiny, rustable steel bits.

For the most part, I use an automotive buffer and rubbing compound. I then follow with some sima-crome and a rag. Not as finally polished as pulling the parts and using a bench polisher, but it don't take long and the bike looks nice!

Dust mask

I have a small shop vac and a hose with an attachment setup right underneath my wheel so i dont breath that nasty stuff and debris does not go all over my shop.

The vacum is a good idea. I need a shield to direct my dust and strings down .


The steel wool i use is the finest made.(i believe) Roy
