  • Air Box Drain Hole

The last time I had my air box cover off I noticed that the drain hole is on the carb side of the filter. Doesn't that mean that there is unfiltered air going into the carbs? Is there supposed to be some sort of check valve in the drain hole?

Mine is the same, there is a drain hole but nothing in it. I thought it was strange and spent 15 minutes looking for a dropped item on the barn floor!!

If the drain hole is within the filter perimeter (inside), the air coming in will be filtered. I can't remember if it is located there...

no the little drainhole is in the part where the air is already been filtered,so better do something about it if you're worth a xs1100:

I went out and looked at the stock airbox on my 78.
The only opening other that the inlet snorkle and the 4 boots to the carbs, is on the bottom of the access cover to the air filter.
This opening (with a piece of foam in it) is in the center of the cover. This area is the fresh air area before the filter. The airflow goes from the snorkle under the seat to the center of the filter, through the filter, then out to the carbs so all the debris ends up on the inside of the filter (opposite of how most filters work).
If yours is like this then no junk is being sucked into the engine through the airbox.
Look real close at the design of the airbox and you'll see what I mean

The hole can be useful if you ever have a float stick and gas drains into the airbox. I had one stick for the first time at the SE rally and gas drained out of the hole that would have otherwise stayed in the airbox. I didn't realize a float was stuck until I saw gas coming out of my bike.
