  • XS 1100 E Pick-up Coil replacement

    Hello to all

This forum has been very beneficial to an older biker who has jumped back into motorcycling. Just purchased a 78' 1100 E. The pick-up coil wires are causing the bike to not start or run intermittantly. After moving the wires manually, the bike will then run. The bike has a new battery, plug wires are good, coils check out, new spark plugs. My first attempt is to do the wire splice as explained. The pick-up coil assembly can be oredered from my local Yamaha dealer. That is my back-up plan. Can someone explain the exact replacement technique for this part which may be necessary if all does not go well with the splice. The pick-up coil is the part that has the wires which I am going to attempt to splice? Thanks again for all the interesting information.

I have not done this job, but I'll comment anyway. Does the new pickup have enough wire to reach the connector? If so, avoid splices and go to the connector. Mike's XS has the connector pins, receptacles, and shells if you need them. A splice represents a potential problem later, especially if it isn't done correctly.

      small gauge wire

i've also heard some guys going with wire from like test equipment (the leads from a ohm meter for example ) they are not as stiff as regular wire and will take to bending many more miles worth.Imho i think that would also better serve the timing coming in a hair faster (better performance) but I AM NOT AN XSpert by any means.

Repaired mine by soldering in new pieces of wire(Meter test leads from Radio Shack. Put in new pieces of wire abaout 5 " long. Mine had already been spliced by some PO didn't have much wire to work with coming out of the pick up coils I'm not sure I'd be able to slice them again if these broke. I also tried to make sure there wasn't to sharp a radius on the wire when I put it back together. that may help in the long run
