Shimming the Clutch Springs

OK, I decided to shim the clutch springs to fix clutch slipping. Got some steel washers of the appropriate OD and painstakingly drilled them out on the drill press to clear the spring posts.

The first one slides into position nicely, but it fills up the spring counter bore. The springs could possibly rub on the spring posts and cause problems. The counter bore positions the springs so they don't rub on the posts.

Anyone have feed back?

I know that on honda cb,s a spark plug washer is a perfect fit for shimming the clutch springs.It might work on your bike, also It even centers the spring if you place the flat side down.This works best on new plug washers that have not been compressed yet.I used washers from a champion lawnmower plug.It worked realy well. I now have a clutch that will not slip no matter how hard I bang on it.

replacing your clutch plates may not fix your clutch slipping. Before you spend the money, try flipping the pressure plate around. The very last (or first, depending out how you look at it) steel plate is held in the basket with a thin wire keeper. Remove the keeper and flip that plate around.

There is a flat spring that wears a groove in the pressure plate. This will cause the clutch to slip even though the fibers are in spec. I suspect it is why shimming the clutch springs came about.

Thanks everyone for your input on clutch springs, plates etc. Geezer, I got the Barnett spring set for $15 from Chapparal. The springs are about 1/16" longer than the stock and the EBC spring kit. I am happy I won't have washers in the clutch.

Next: take the carbs back off and clean them good. It's almost winter and I might as well do all the details and plan for next spring.

Hows the pull at the clutch lever? While Barnet spings help the clutch lock up well they're also good for strengthening your left hand. ;o)

OK. I polished the clutch cover and put it back on the bike. Adjusted the clutch cable. I gave it a good pull and found it's a good bit stiffer with Barnett Springs.

I felt pretty strong sqeezing the clutch lever a few times until my rather small 13 year old came in and squeezed it and said "hmmm".
