  • XJ Cam Chain Adjustment...is it the same?

On an XJ, what timing mark do I need to be set at for cam chain adjustment?

    Thanks guys!

The XJ has only 2 marks on the timing shaft rotor, "T" for timing, top dead center, and "C" for Cam chain adjuster. Yes, follow the instructions for XS using the "C" mark!

          Thanks Jerry,

Is that from the XJ service manual from Yamaha? I'm getting the bike working better and better. The bugs are working out one by one.

Yep, page is from the Yamaha service manual. Two notes...if you are turning the crankshaft clockwise and overshoot the mark, DON"T BACK UP the crank. Go ahead another revolution to line up the marks. Other point is do not overtighten the stopper bolt or nut. Torque figures are not much more than finger tight. The adjuster housing is aluminum, and over-tightening will strip the housing threads. Tkat is working on a process to put a heli-coil in the housing to prevent/repair stripped threads. The heli-coil is much harder and a lot less prone to stripping out. Over-tightening can also nick the sliding bolt that moves forward to take up the slack, making it not slide properly.

I adjust my cam chain at every oil change, about 3K miles. Only takes a couple minutes once you have done it a time or two.
