Well Ken, first off the XJ does not have the movable vacuum advance plate. That's what the pressure transducer is for, and why the XJ has a different ignition box than the the earlier XS (except the 81, I guess). It uses the pressure transducer to send a variable signal (dependant on engine vacuum) to the ignition box, so that it can control the advance electronically. But just for you..... I started the bike and tried wiggling the wires around (everywhere I could get to them)to see if anything happened. A bit hard to do, since there really isn't much slack in these wires anywhere, and you also have to be pretty careful with that trigger wheel spinning around. But, still no change. I even looked in the service manual to see if you could adjust the pick-up coil gap. Not adjustable. At least they don't give an air-gap spec anywhere. I can't think of anything else I can check electrically, but I'm open for suggestions.................

        Hey John,

One thing that has been nagging in the back of my mind is the YICS!? I don't know much about it, but wondering if there might be some clogs, or something amiss in it that could be affecting things? I remember reading a tech tip/off site tip about making your own YICS tool, so there's something about it. Perhaps Jerry can chime in with more info about it??

Have you checked your intake manifolds for leaks? Wish I knew more!?
        Good Luck, TC.

Yeah, I know Mitch! I knew in the back of my mind it would come down to that, but I also know that a lot of so-called "carb problems" wind up being ignition related, so I felt it was best to eliminate an questions regarding ignition first. Plus of course, I just really wanted to put off pulling those damn carbs as long as possible!
TC, as far as the YICS system, I'm not familiar enough with it to know if it could have anything to do with this issue or not. I guess I'll do some reading in the service manual and see if it could. I did spray some carb cleaner around the boots, but it didn't seem to have any effect. They are pretty badly cracked but they don't seem to be leaking. I just wish the XJ airbox was made like the XS, so it wasn't such a major PITA to get those carbs in and out. This just might wind up waiting till winter when I got more time to mess with it...........

TC, I found the page about making the YICS tool (it's on-site, even tho it's under "off-site tips"). However the picture which shows how it goes together won't come up. If I try to "view image", I get a "404 Not Found" error that says "www.xs11.com/tips/norm/YICS.gif could not be found on this server". A remnant of the hackings, maybe? I'd like to make one of these, but it's pretty much impossible without that pic.

I'll send you a jpeg on your pm adress if I can make it work. I have never made one so I can not verify that it will work. It is probably the picture that you are looking for.

                Macnut,

Here's the pixture, found it in the XS11 files archives.

Here's the most recent link to that tech tip, and the picture shows up in it!? Not sure which link you found. I had a reference to an older link that had the text but not the picture!

TC, I tried that link first, and I kept getting a "could not locate" error. Must have been a DNS issue or something because it's working now. Sadly, I actually got more info on the YICS system from that tip than what my XJ service manual has in it (which is pretty much nothing)! I may make one of these tools and try it just to see if it will help me diagnose which carbs are screwed up (again). It may be that the YICS balance tube system is "masking" the real problem here. Tho I know I will still have to go thru the carbs again, maybe I can narrow it down to which are the real culprits and not have to go thru them all again.
Skids, thanks for your help, but I've got it all printed out now, so I'm good to go.

                    Hey Macnut,

The problem with that link is that there are 2 of them on that page, one near the top, which is a different OFFSITE link with the proper working pix link, and then the one you can find among the Norm's Tips section, where it uses the XS11.com site for file storage, and the photo link is messed up!! But I don't have access to the original HTML for that page to fix it! The photo is in the XS11.com file archives that us Moderators can access, so that's how I was able to put it up! Good luck!
