Hello Im new to the board and have a quick question. I recently purchased an XS1100 special from a local shop. I was riding it and all the sudden it started makin a horrible noise. After getting it home I inspected the headers and noticed one of the them to be loose. I tried to tighten it but to my dismay the stud pulled out of the head. Apperently the previaus owner had JB welded the stud into the head. I drilled out the JB weld and chased the previous threads, inserted a heli-coil but it still fit loosely. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Or, just drill and tap for a larger size stud.Brian

You could try a keensert. This is a solid metal tread insert that goes in much like the helicoil, but it had hooks or teeth that you set with a hammer and it holds real good!79 XS1100 f (BIGDOG)

Studs
On my xj, i removed all the stock studs bought some 3/8 threaded rod and drilled and tapped all the stud holes and installed 3/8 studs and double up on the nuts. I had to enlargen the flange holes a little but it worked fine. Why? you might wonder, cause 2 of the original ones were broke and the new ones are much stronger. Just thought i would mention it . $3.00 total cost and 3 hrs labour! HTH..............MITCHDoug Mitchell

I found them at one of my local hardware stores, but most of them do not carry keenserts. My hardware store called them threaded steel inserts. I did find that most any nut and bolt company or a company that deals in fasteners carry them. You can also do a search on the internet for keenserts and you will find plenty of them. Good luck!79 XS1100 f (BIGDOG)
