AFAIK the tach drops to 0 when there's a charging system problem. Check voltages... when the bike is running.

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

        Q & D charging test

        Hi Noby,
for a quick & dirty charging check, point your headlight at a wall, garage door, whatever; mebbe 10 feet away (after dark works best.) If the splotch of light brightens as you rev the motor up from idle, it's charging. If it don't, it ain't.

OK, so I've tried all the "fixes" listed, and mine just isn't right, yet. At idle, it seems to work fine, but when revving the engine steadily, the needle fluctuates wildly. Any more suggestions? Thanks

              connections?

              Hi Noeleo,
what cured my tach was pulling the connectors apart, applying dielectric grease and then snapping them together and apart again several times to clean the contacts as there's no way I can see to get at those teensy little prongs & sockets directly.
My XS11SG has the two tach connectors in the headlight shell, I do believe that they are hidden elsewhere on the Standards.

                Hi NOBY

In fact, the tacho is a frequencymeter; it shows frequency of AC comming from the AC generator (AC generator being on the crankshaft, frequency depends of engine RPM)
With your symptom, no AC when idle : the regulator is faulty (regulator is in the rectifier module )
