Something I just experienced.... If you replace the carb boots, check the tightness of the fasteners after a couple thousand k's or miles. After syncing carbs the other day, I thought I'd slip an allen key in the carb boot nuts just to check them and most had to be retightened up to 1/4 turn!

But like Piet said, they can be cracked on the outside, but still sealed on the inside, dual layered. With it running, spray some starter fluid spray or WD40 around the boots and listen for change in engine, if detected, then they ARE leaking, but if no change noted, then they are sealed. You can pretty them up with spray on Plastidip type rubber sealant!
