  • slight snags refreshing this old beast after neglect

So you all helped me with some wiring issues with the headlight. Getting my carbs singing that sweet throaty song again. But that was just scratching the surface of what I've been doing here getting this thing back in shape after years of neglect.

When I had it out riding two up with my very light lady I noticed the suspension was sacked and I was bottoming out over stuff I shouldn't. I mean I am used to a KLR lately but I never remember it being that bad before and I've had it loaded down with gear in the past that is probably about equal in weight to her. Also the front brakes where pulsating. So I decided on redoing the suspension and brakes.

I rebuilt the master brake cylinder. Wow was it dirty. Nasty. Took the front calipers off and removed the cylinder. Same thing. Also those clips that hold the brake pads in are really rusty, is there a place to get new ones? I have ordered caliper kits to replace the seals. And I ordered stainless lines from https://www.technafitstore.com/.

That is my first snag. They shorted me one line! I've emailed them today and waiting to hear back from them. They were supposed to send 4 lines. The three for front and the rear one, but they sent the rear one and two for the fronts.

I started my suspension today. I changed the fork oil and put the front Progressive Suspension springs in today. Then I went to do the back one's and read the instructions that I need a 0.25" travel limiter. Is that right? I checked and the wheel doesn't touch the fender when it's bottomed out with the shocks on it, although it does touch the blinker wires, but I could route them better. I looked all over and no one has the 0.25" travel limiters in stock... it's like they are discontinued... I emailed them to see where I can get them. Do you think I need it if it's not touching the fender when it's bottomed out?

Sorry if I rambled, had a little lubrication tonight, early Happy Father's day everyone.

The two front lines are probably meant to use a double banjo at the master cylinder and go to each caliper respectively, ignoring the splitter in the middle.

That would not be the oem configuration. I would send them back.

I checked their website and they only offer 4 line kits for the XS, did not see any other options to order. Sorry to see that you didn't get what you needed with the brake lines, hopefully it doesn't take long to get it rectified.

I am also looking for brake lines and remembered Kurt recommending the Goodridge from UK. Front for the 78-80 XS1100 is $80 british pounds = $100 USD. Shipping about $20.

I noticed the Technafit site says a four line kit for fronts. The Goodridge contact confirmed their kit is 3 line for front.

I am going to measure and confirm befor ordering.

I believe Technafit is 4 lines for the front and rear combined. 3 front, 1 rear.

Yep, it is for front and back. My mistake.

Technafit apologized and sent me the missing one right away and I got it today. Simple mistake, but I'm happy with how fast they corrected it.

Haven't heard anything back from Progressive Suspension about the travel limiter though, , not so happy with them.

The .25 limiter is so the shocks will never actually bottom out. That damages the shock. It is not necessary but recommended so you get the most life from the shocks. Should not be that hard to make one that will work and install it. I only have Progressives front springs so I do not know how hard it is to remove springs from the rear ones. I know stock ones are not that bad.
